Harry Eugene Burke Sr. was born on 19 May 1878 at Homestead, Paradise Valley, Nevada; He was actually born in the old Camp Scott buildings which were north of town.. Proof of the location and date of H.E. Burke's birth was provided in the fallowing General Affidavit given by Mary Freemonth, age thirty eight years and wife of John F Freemonth age sixty one years, citizens of the town of Paradise, county of Humboldt, State of Nevada. This affidavit states that "I was present with the above named Eugenia S. Burke, when she was delivered of a male child, which child was born in Paradise Valley Nevada on the 19th day of May 1878 and said child was named Eugene Burke. There was no physicion present. The husband Herman Burke, myself and other neighbor ladies had to act in the capacity of accoun--- in the absence of the regular physician and I remember the date as above stated and the circumstances very distinctly".2,3 He was the son of Herman Daniel Burke and Sarah Eugenia Jones.1 Harry first appears in the census of Herman Daniel Burke and Sarah Eugenia Jones on 10 June 1880 at Fremont Township, Santa Clara County, California.4 Gene is listed in Hermans and Sarah's household during the Territorial Census' of 1883, 1885 and in the house of Alfred Baker and Sarah house in 1892. He was listed in the widows pension declaration of his mother Sarah Eugenia Jones on 18 December 1893; In a declaration for pension of children under sixteen years of age, Sarah provided proof of the names of her and Herman Burke's children and of Herman's date of death. In that declaration, she states that "Eugenia S. Baker, resident of Kent, age 48 years is the legal guardian of Eugene Burke, Willie Burke, Victor Burke, James Burke, and Mabel Burke, that they are the legitimate children of Herman Burke who Enlisted under the name of Herman Burke at Indianapolis on ----- Certif No 265092 in the war of the Rebellion who died(3) Sept 20, 1888".3 Harry became the first King County free scholar to attend the Washington Agricultural College and School of Science in Pullman, Washington (Now Washington State University). In his autobiography, Harry reported his majors as: "First Year, Mining Engineering; Second Year in Economic Science and History with Law the final objective; after that Zoology". He appeared on the 1900 U.S. census as a student at WSU in Pullman. Harry graduated from Pullman on 19 June 1902 (With high honors, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology. He returned to Pullman under the supervision of Professor Charles V. Piper to receive a Master of Science Degree in Entomology on 18 June 1908. He finished his education by earning a PhD. in Entomology from Stanford University on 18 Jun 1928.5 Before Harry Eugene burke graduated from Pullman, a fire destroyed a mens dormitory in spring of 1900. According to Family lore, Harry's step father, Alfred Baker, came and paid to replace the things that Harry's lost in the fire. He (Alfred), who had by then deserted Harry's mother (Sarah Eugenia) , did so with the provision that Harry would not tell his mother that Harry had seen him.. circa 1900.6 Harry Eugene Burke Sr. appeared on the census of 5 June 1900 in Pullman, Whitman County, Washington.7 Between 1902 and 1934, he was employed by U.S. Bureau of Entomology, which eventually became Division of Entomology within the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. During a 30 year career H.E. Burke worked on various projects in Washington D.C., Washington State, South Dakota, Utah, Yellowstone National Park, Oregon, Idaho and California. He first specialized in forest Insects, particularly those of the wood boring family Buprespidae, while later his work focused on insects infesting shade trees.5 Another was William Douglas Edmonston.8 Harry married Marion Josephine Armstrong, daughter of Luther Kelly Armstrong and Marion Rebecca Brown, on 8 April 1907 in in the parsonage of the Assistant Pastor of the Epiphany Episcopal Church., Washington, D. C..5,9 Marion and Gene appeare on the census of 15 April 1910 in Washington, D. C..10 He was recorded on a World War I Draft Registration Card, on 12 September 1918 at San Jose, Santa Clara County, California; Home address: 139 Alpine Ave, Los Gatos, California. Forrest Entomologist U.S. Government.11 They are recordedi n the census of 23 January 1920 in Los Gatos, Santa Clara County, California.12 On the census of 16 April 1930 they are recorded at 1551 Emmerson, Palo Alto, California.13 Harry Eugene Burke Sr. and Fred Eugeneheusch Mozart were associated circa 1940 at Los Gatos, Santa Clara County, California; The H.E. Burke's and Norman Pratt's bought the original Mozart Home on Mozart Ave. Fred and Eva Mozart built a new house next to the Burke-Pratt home and started a chicken ranch. Fred and Eva were retired Vaudville people who, besides farming, during the 20's used their home to board struggling young actors. At some time during that peoriod, a young English actor named Archibald Alexander Leach (Cary Grant) spent several months boarding with them. So, David and Paul Pratt ended up sleeping in a room slept in by Cary Grant. Neat huh! Another interesting note about Fred Mozart involved his death. The night Fred Died, Sam Hatter the local undertaker was called. The room where Fred's body was located was dark. When Sam went in to get the body, a parrott belonging to Fred and Eva said, in Fred's voice, some thing like "hello, how are you doing". Even though Sam had been an undertaker along time, it gave him the willies.8 Harry Eugene Burke Sr. and Marion Josephine Armstrong appeared on the census of 3 May 1940 in Redwood Township (Los Gatos), Santa Clara County, California.14 He died on 26 March 1963 at San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, at age 84.15 During more than 50 years of marriage, Harry and his wife, Marion lived in many places. Their first official residence was 136 Rhode Island Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. where they lived from September 1907 until June 1909. In 1910 and 1911 they lived in Baker City Oregon and then moved to Yreka California in 1911. They remained in Yreka through the summer of 1912. Between 1912 and 1916 they called Placerville, Eldorado County, California home. It was on to Los Gatos, California in time for school in 1916. Los Gatos was called home until 1921 when they moved to Palo Alto where they lived through 1938. For most of their stay in Palo Alto, they lived a 1551 Emerson Street. Between 1939 and 1961, they again lived in Los Gatos on Mozart lane. They moved to Sunberry Lane, Campbell, California shortly before Harry's death in 1963.16 Harry Eugene Burke Sr. and Jesse Lee Webb worked together at the Buearu of Entomology.5 Cousin Hazel Jones Pulse and husband Harry were frequent visitors to the Harry Burke Sr. home.8 Though not related, the Harry Eugene Burke Sr. and Arthur Jacobson families were closely associated Their relationship began when Harry, a department of Agreculture entomologist, was studying and supervising the spraying of needletiers and sawflies along the Yellowstone park highway outside of West Yellowstone, Montana. That was during the summers of 1925-1927. Art was Yellowstone Park Ranger and a batchelor at the time and gave up his residence for the Burke family to stay in during their stay at Yellowstone. A strong friendship developed at the time and lasted through the remainder of both thair lives. Art and Vee actually bought part of the Burkes 2 acres on Mozart Avenue in Los Gatos where they built a home after Art's retirement from the Park service.8,17 In 2002 Harry Eugene Burke was honored by Washington State University as having been the first to recieve a graduate degree with a major in Entomology.18 A synapsis of Burke's contribution to the field of Forest entomology can be found in a USDA General Technical Report intitled Harry E. Burke and John M. Miller, Pioneers in Western Forest Entomology.19
