After his marriage he and his family spent the summers at their home on East Bay and their winters at Belleville. Was one of the first to build at Walterborough, ca 1800. In the early 1800s moved to NC, where he had a plantation on the Northeast River above Wilmington, called Thornbury. In the summer the family moved to Smithville (now Southport) NC. About 1814, after suffering financial losses, he gave up his plantation and settled in Smithville, taking a position as a sugeon at Fort Johnston (he was a practicing physician as well as a planter). His wife Eliza opened a boarding school for girls called "The Convent" by the younger Clitheralls. This was the first educational institution in the town, and perhaps in the county of Brunswick.2

He then became the first rector of St. John's Church which was adjacent to the White House.1 After the death of Harriet, he married Marion Hannah Cox, daughter of Maj Richard Cox and Jane Ross, on 23 January 1812 at Glouster County, New Jersey.6 William's book "The Episcopal Manual" was first published in 1815. This book became one of the most frequently reprinted books on Episcopal doctrine and worship that appeared in the ninteenth century. At about this time, he also became the editor and principal founder of the Washington Theological Prepertory and Churchman's Guide.7 William Wilmer appeared during the census of January 1821 in Alexandria, Alexandria County, Virginia; His household was recored as: Free White Males: U10(3); 16-25(1); 25-44(1). Free White Females: U10(2); 16-25(1); 26-44(1); Slaves: Male 14-25(1); Females 14-25(1); Free Colored Persons: Females 14-25(1). The index reports the Enumeration Date as 7 Aug 1820.8 After the death of Marion, William Holland Wilmer married Anne Brice Fitzhugh, daughter of Daniel McCarty Fitzhugh and Ann Henderson, on 5 February 1823 in Alexandria, Virginia; They were married by the Rev. Oliver Norris.9,10 Willim H. Wilmer became the President of William and Mary College in 1826.11 He died on 24 July 1827 in Williamsburg at age 44.7 The faculty of William and Mary College, "from respect of his worth [Dr. Wilmer, Former President] and services, requested that his remains should be deposited in the Chapel, and they would have taken on the College the expense of erecting a neat monument as had been done in the case of Bishop Madison. His family however preferred that he sould be interred near the Alter in the Church in which he was the much loved pastor, and the Society, believing that it would meet the sanction and approbation of the Visitors did not hesitate to contribute twenty dollars out of the college funds towards a monument to his memory erected in the church on the south side of the Alter".12 In 1839, the Alexandria Episcopal High School was founded at the sight of a school for boys conducted by the widow of Rev. Dr. William H. Wilmer.12
