ChartsSome Descendants of A Burke Family from the Kingdom of Hanover
Last Edited31 Jan 2018
Herman Daniel Burke was born between 20 June 1837 and 20 June 1838 in Kingdom of Hanover, Germany; There is disagreement between family sources as to Hermans birth date. The estimate prsented here is based on agreement between the 1860 and 1870 US Census as well as the age given on Hermans military papers. The age given on the 1880 census would make him 5 years younger.1,2 He was the son of (?) Burke. Herman Daniel Burke appeared on the census of 20 June 1860 in The Second Ward, Indianpolis, Marion County, Indiana. He was listed as a currier with a personal estate of $225 and a birth place of Hanover. Others in his household were Thomas G. Boray, Lewis Shrilmeyer, and David S. Stout. His age was give as 22 years which would make his birth between 20 jun 1837 and 20 jun 1838.3 Herman volunteered for service in Company "K", 1st. Indiana Calvary on 20 June 1861 at Indianapolis.4,5,1 He began military service on 9 July 1861; Listed on the Muster-In Roll. Joined for duty and enrolled for period of 3 years. Given a horse valued at $90.00 and horse "equipments" valued at $30.00. Registered as Herman Burke, pri, Capt. Bracken's Co., Indiana Mtd, Vols. Book mark: 921 A-EB 70.6,7 Herman's company, known as "Braken's Rangers" was first assigned for duty under General Reynolds and was present at the battles of Green Brier River and Camp Alleghany and charged the enemy's calvary at Huntersville. The unit was then chosen by General Fremont as his body-guard and in this capacity was engaged at Strasburg and in twelve days' skirmishing with the enemy's calvary terminating with the battle of Cross Keys. Company "K" was then transferred to Sigel as his body-guard, participating in the battle of Cedar Mountain and was later with Pope's army in the battles on Manassas Plains. On Nov. 9, 1862, under the command of Capt. Ulrick Dahlgren, Co. "K", First Indiana Calvary, "General Sigel's body-guard" crossed the river and charged Fredericksburg to ascertain the force of the enemy at that place. In his report Capt. Dahlgren stated that "the fighting was of the most desperate nature, our men using their sabers, and the enemy in several instances, clubbing our men with their carbines". Company "K" was then assigned to escort duty with General O.O. Howard participating at Chancellorsville and subsequently at Gettysburg. They were then sent to Glymount, on the lower Potomac, doing provost duty until after the battles in the Wilderness and joined the Army of the Potomac at White House where they remained until mustering out on 23 Jun 1864.7,6 Herman was first wounded 13 Dec 1861 at "Buffalo Mountain" (Officially recorded as An Engagement at Camp Alleghany) Pocahontas County, West Virginia. "During an engagement he recieved a heavy blow on the left side of the head with a musket which completely disabled him at the time and which caused (num)ness in that side".7,8 He ended military service on 19 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. As recorded on the Company Muster-out Roll he was "last paid to Feb 29 1864, amount due soldier $ 2.30." Although undocumented, family history says that Herman reenlisted and served until the end of the War, spending some time in a military hospital in Kansas.6 Harry Burk (Herman Daniel Burke) appeared on the census of 1870 in Yuba City Post Office, Sutter, Sutter County, California; As "Harry Burk" age 32, born in Hanover.9 On 13 August 1877 Herman Daniel Burke married Sarah Eugenia Jones in the Methodist Church, Mountain View, Santa Clara County, California. They were married by Sarah's father the Rev. Charles Pinckney Jones.10 Herman and Sarah appeared on the census of 10 June 1880 in Fremont Township, Santa Clara County, California.11 On an affidavit filed on 6 Sept 1887, Herman requested that he be declared an invalid person. This affidavit was recorded in the King Co., Washington court and was witnessed by John Langston and J.T. Jones. This document has Hermans attempted signature.5 In her Widow's pension file, S.E. Jonses indicates that "during the year of 1864 became afflicted with an ulceration of the bowles which has continued to disable him and from the above disabilities he has never been able to recover his health."5,12 Herman Daniel Burke died on 20 September 1888 in Mountain View, Santa Clara County, California. Her pension application indicated that his civil war problems which included that led to his death was recorded as fallows: "wounded in left knee, back of neck, beaten on head, and was nearly frozen to death. His health was impared (by) his army hardships, and the Dr. Thought his sickness came from his war service his left side became gradually paralyzed & from it he died."5 He appears on the widows pension declaration of Sarah Eugenia Jones on 18 December 1893; In a declaration for pension of children under sixteen years of age, Sarah provided proof of the names of her and Herman Burke's children and of Herman's date of death. In that declaration, she states that "Eugenia S. Baker, resident of Kent, age 48 years is the legal guardian of Eugene Burke, Willie Burke, Victor Burke, James Burke, and Mabel Burke, that they are the legitimate children of Herman Burke who Enlisted under the name of Herman Burke at Indianapolis on ----- Certif No 265092 in the war of the Rebellion who died(3) Sept 20, 1888".5 On 9 October 1894 at San Francisco, California, Herman Daniel Burke and Sarah Eugenia Jones were recorded in a list of pensions granted to applications from the pacific sloap "Washington - Original widows, etc., reissue, minors of Herman Burke, Keht, King county; restoration and reissue".13 Were Herman Daniel Burke and Henry Burke brother's? Proof of the sibling relationship of Henry (Heinrich) and Herman Burke is derived from three sources: 1) Sarah Eugenia Jones/Burke/Bakers widow's pension file which contains an affidavit by Henry Burke living in Indianapolis. While this form initially seems to state that Henry is not a relative, a closer examination reveals a hand written line below the formal statement that clearly states that "Henry Burke is a brother". This line is in the same hand writing as the rest of the document; 2) A letter from his mother, Sarah Eugenia to Harry Eugene Burke, Sr. indicates that Herman had a brother living in Indianapolis, and the brother, she though, had a son named "Ed". This Henry Burke was the only Henry Burke found in Indianapolis. who indicated the he was from Hanover with a son named Ed. Family tradition also says that Herman came to the United States with at least one brother (perhaps two), that the brothers settled in Cincinnati before migrating to Indianapolis; 3) This Henry Burke and his wife were recorded on the 1850 U.S. Census in Cincinnati and then appear on the 1860 census in Indianapolis. While certainly not concrete, it seems sufficient to accept that the Indianapolis Henry who signed the affidavit is the same Henry (married to Henrietta) appearing on the 1850 and 1860 censuses and that he was actually Herman's brother.1,5,2

This would mean that Eliza and Isabell would have to have been the same person. This would mean that Eliza was 14 when she married Chester (not out of the question). The 1900 census lists her birth date as 1837 which is probably the most acurate. The only other posaibility of would be that Elijah (listed as a 15 year old Farmer) was really Eliza (not likely). in 1999.6
