      According to Wickipedia The Battle of Roan's Tan Yard, also known as Silver Creek, was an action during the American Civil War, occurring on January 8, 1862, in Randolph County, Missouri. Rumors and sightings of a Confederate force in the Howard County area had circulated for more than a week, but the Union troops could not locate them. On January 7, 1862, information was received that Col. John A. Poindexter and his force of 800 Missouri State Guard recruits were camped on Silver Creek. Detachments from various Union units came together and headed towards the Confederate camp which was about 14 miles northwest of Fayette. Despite heavy fog, the Federal troops found the camp and attacked in the late afternoon, routing the enemy in only 40 minutes and sending those that were not killed, wounded, or captured fleeing for safety. Two companies of Federal cavalry were ordered to cut off the Confederates' retreat, but darkness and heavy fog, together with thick underbrush, rendered it impossible.⁸

     James Quinn Slaughter was born on 22 September 1840 at Kentucky.^1,2 He was the son of William Hynes Slaughter and Frances Quinn.¹ James Quinn Slaughter was included in the census of William Hynes Slaughter and Margaret Ann Strother on 15 June 1860 at Larue County, Kentucky.³ James Quinn Slaughter married Viola Ray Lee, daughter of Samuel Buffington Lee and Martha Ray Best, before 1869 at Kentucky.⁴ James Quinn Slaughter died on 13 April 1915 at Hardin County, Kentucky, at age 74; Burial: Death Certificate simply says buried: Sonora,KY.²

     Conrad Henry Hogrefe was born on 4 October 1840 at Hanover, Germany.^1,2 He was the son of Fred Hogrefe and Mary (?)² Conrad Henry Hogrefe married Mary Kuhlman, daughter of Henry Kuhlman, in October 1870 at Germany.^1,3 Conrad Henry Hogrefe and Mary Kuhlman were found on a passenger list on 23 August 1872 at New York, New York; Port of Depature, Bremen, Germany. Ship name: Donau. Traveling with them was Sophia Kuhlman, age 18.⁴ Henry and Mary Hogrefe appeared on the census of 9 June 1900 in Cass, Hancock County, Ohio.⁵ Conrad Henry Hogrefe and Mary Kuhlman appeared on the census of 4 May 1910 in Cass, Hancock County, Ohio.¹ Conrad and Mary last appeared together on the census of 14 January 1920 in Cass.⁶ He died on 10 February 1928 at Cass, Hancock County, Ohio, at age 87.²

     Mary Caroline Bissell was born on 5 October 1840 at Alabama.^1,4 She was the daughter of Titus Lucretius Bissell and Claudia Eliza Bennett.^3,4 Mary Caroline Bissell married John Anderson, son of Robert Anderson and Maria Thomas, circa 1860 at South Carolina.¹ Mary Caroline Bissell and John Anderson appeared on the census of 11 June 1870 in Greenville, South Carolina.¹ Mary Caroline Bissell and John Anderson appeared on the census of 10 June 1880 in Charleston, South Carolina; This Census included "Kate's" sister, Emma L. Bissell, age 37.⁵ Mary appeared as a widowed head of house on the census of 20 June 1900 in Charleston, South Carolina; This census includes William D. Bennett,age 19, step son?⁶ Widow Mary also appeared on the census of 19 April 1910 in Charleston.⁷ Mary died on 4 May 1916 at Charleston, South Carolina, at age 75.⁴

     Johann Heinrich Blese was born on 19 October 1840 at Popowo, Posen, Prussia.² He was the son of Johann Blese and Beate Luise Drewitz.¹ Johann Heinrich Blese was baptized on 1 November 1840 at Evangelical Parish, Wronke, Posen, Prussia.² He immigrated from Germany to the United States circa 1860; He was naturalized by 1900.³ He married Wilhelmina "Minnie" Plaster, daughter of Friedrich Plaster and Anna (?), circa 1868 at Wisconsin.^4,5 Johann Heinrich Blese and Wilhelmina "Minnie" Plaster appeared on the census of 11 August 1870 in Watertown, Jefferson County, Wisconsin.⁵ Johann Heinrich Blese appeared on the census of 11 June 1880 in Posippi, Waushara County, Wisconsin.⁴ Henry and Minnie Blase appeared on the census of 4 June 1900 in Poysippi, Waushara County, Wisconsin.³ Henry and Minnie also appeared on the census of 26 April 1910 in Poy Sippi, Waushara County, Wisconsin.⁶ Henry and daughter Lucy appeared on the census of 16 January 1920 in Ward 3, Berlin, Green Lake County, Wisconsin; Henry is a widower for this census.⁷

     Edward Addison Craighill was born on 2 November 1840 at Charles Town, Jefferson County, Virginia.² He was the son of William Nathaniel Craighill and Sarah Elizabeth Brown.¹ Edward Addison Craighill was born in 1841 at Virginia.¹ He was recorded in the census of his parents, William Nathaniel Craighill and Sarah Elizabeth Brown, on 22 July 1850 at District 28, Jefferson County, Virginia.¹ He was also recorded in the census of his parents on 5 September 1860 at Charles Town, Jefferson County, West Virginia.³ Edward Addison Craighill Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 22 April 1861. Enlisted in Company G, 2nd Infantry Regiment Virginia on 22 Apr 1861. Promoted to Full Assistant Surgeon on 16 Nov 1861, at Charlestown, Virginia.⁴ He appeared on the census of 18 June 1870 in Lynchburg, Campbell County, Virginia.⁵ He married Mary Hattie (?) before 1880.⁶ Edward Addison Craighill and Mary Hattie appeared on the census of 1 June 1880 in Lynchburg, Campbell County, Virginia.⁶ Edward and Mary appeared on the census of 17 January 1920 in Lynchburg City, Virginia.⁷

     Elizabeth J. Hall was born on 23 November 1840 at Wisconsin.^1,5 She was the daughter of William Hall and Priscilla Warfield.⁴ Elizabeth J. Hall was included in the census of William Hall and Priscilla Warfield on 26 August 1850 at District No. 24, Grant County, Wisconsin.⁶ Elizabeth J. Hall was also included in the census of her parents on 15 August 1860 at Lancaster, Grant County, Wisconsin.⁷ Elizabeth circa 1861, migrated with her parents, William Hall and Priscilla Warfield, to San Joaquin County, California.⁸ In Calfiornia, she married Richard Reynolds, son of James Reynolds and Martha Rosanna Ramsey, circa 1862 in California.^1,5,3 Elizabeth J. Hall and Richard Reynolds appeared on the census of 18 June 1880 in Merced County, California.⁹ Richard and Elizabeth appeared on the census of 1 June 1900 in Castoria, San Joaquin County, California.⁵ They appeared on the census of 21 April 1910 also in Castoria.¹⁰ Elizabeth Reynolds was included in the census of her daugher Bertha and Bertha's 3rd husband Lyle Roy Miller on 16 January 1920 at Stockton, San Joaquin County, California.¹¹ Elizabeth J. Hall died on 5 February 1922 at San Joaquin County, California, at age 81; From an news paper obituary posted at Find A Grave: "Mrs. Elizabeth Reynolds, the last memeber of the pioneer Hall family of the South San Joaquin, and widow of Richard Reynolds, also of a pioneer San Joaquin family passed away yesterday in Stockton"; Mrs. Reynolds located in San Joaquin county with her father and mother, William and Pricilla Hall, after crossing the plains in a wagon train in 1861"; "Mrs. Reynolds had a twin sister and three brothers, all of whom preceded her to the grave. She is survived by three children, William Reynoldds of French Camp, Edward Reynolds of Tracy and Mrs. Miller. There are a number of grandchildren. Mrs. Reynolds was the sister-in-law of David R. Reynolds of Stocton, Eldridge Reynolds of Stocton, Edward Reynolds of Lathrop and James A. Reynolds of Capitola".^1,4,8

     Nancy E. Fleming was born in December 1840 at Tennessee.^1,3 She was the daughter of Hazel (Keziah?) Fleming and Elvira (?)³ Nancy E. Fleming was included in the census of Hazel (Keziah?) Fleming and Elvira (?) on 25 September 1850 at District No. 2, Logan County, Kentucky.⁴ Nancy was included in the census of her mother Elvira (?) Fleming on 18 June 1860 at Benton P.O., Franklin County, Illinois.⁵ Nancy E. Fleming married Green Cantrell, son of Larkin Cantrell and Eunice Moberly, on 26 December 1878 at Franklin County, Illinois.^1,2 Nancy E. Fleming was included in the census of Green Cantrell on 11 June 1880 at Benton, Franklin County, Illinois.¹ Nancy, her mother and daughter, all appeared on the census of 16 June 1900 in Benton, Franklin County, Illinois.³

     Elisha Barten Steed was born in December 1840 at Ohio.⁴ He was the son of Henry Steed and Matilda (?)³ Elisha Barten Steed appeared on the census of his parents, Henry and Mitilda Steed, of 13 August 1850 in Perry, Lawrence County, Ohio.⁵ He married Mariah/Maria Dodge on 18 August 1859 at Lawrence County, Ohio.^4,6 Elisha Barten Steed and Mariah/Maria Dodge appeared on the census of 11 June 1860 in Perry Township, Lawrence County, Ohio.⁷ Elisha Barten Steed and Mariah/Maria Dodge appeared on the census of 15 June 1880 in Perry, Lawrence County, Ohio; The 1890 census included grandson Edgar Steed, age 0, and Mother-In-Law, Almire Fisher.² Elisha Barten Steed appeared on the Special Schedule census of Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines, And Widows, ECT.      Albert Gallatin Perry was born on 1 December 1840 at Ohio.^5,6,7 He was the son of Leander Perry and Jarah Jane Jones.^3,4 Albert married Almeda Hulse, daughter of Samuel Dement Hulse and Jane Bickley Dickerson, on 27 April 1865 at Lafayette County, Missouri.¹ Albert Gallatin Perry and Armelia Hulse appeared on the census of 15 August 1870 in Sni-A-Bar, Jackson County, Missouri.⁵ Albert Gallatin Perry and Armelia Hulse appeared on the census of 4 June 1900 in Oak Grove, Jackson County, Missouri.⁶ Albert Gallatin Perry died on 14 June 1909 at Oak Grove, Jackson County, Missouri, at age 68.⁷

     Hannah Button Lutrell was born on 22 December 1840 at Virginia.¹ She married John Augustus Holtzman on 19 December 1860 at Culpeper County, Virginia.¹ Hannah Button Lutrell died on 18 January 1907 at Culpeper County, Virginia, at age 66.¹

     Leven E. Henderson was born circa 1841 at Indiana.¹ He married Martha Jane McCollum, daughter of James McCollum and Lydia Ann Lewis, circa 1852.^1,2 Leven E. Henderson and Martha Jane McCollum appeared on the census of 8 August 1870 in Bible Grove, Clay County, Illinois.² Leven and Martha Henderson appeared on the census of 8 June 1880 in Hoosier, Clay County, Illinois.³

     Caroline Burleson was born circa 1841 at New York.^1,2 She married Henry Jackson Pool on 1 May 1860 at Sonoma County, California.¹ Caroline Burleson and Henry Jackson Pool appeared on the census of 2 July 1860 in Russian River Township, Sonoma County, California.³ Caroline Burleson died on 28 November 1861 at Sonoma County, California.¹

     Nancy Susan Burnley was born circa 1841 at Virginia.¹ She was the daughter of Caleb Burnley and Lucy Elizabeth Spilman.¹ Nancy Susan Burnley was recorded in the census of her parents, Caleb Burnley and Lucy Elizabeth Spilman, on 18 October 1850 at Culpeper, Virginia.³ She is listed as head of house when she appeared on the census of 19 July 1870 in Jefferson, Culpeper County, Virginia.⁴ She married Arthur E. Stark, son of Weedon Stark, at Virginia.⁵ Nancy Susan Burnley and Arthur E. Stark appeared on the census of 3 June 1880 in Jefferson, Culpeper County, Virginia; This census included Fannie O.      Alvis Taylor was born circa 1841 at Illinois.² He was the son of Jesse Taylor and Nancy Hill.² Alvis Taylor appeared on the census of 10 September 1850 in Franklin county, Illinois.³ He was included in the census of Jesse Taylor and Nancy Hill on 10 September 1850 at Not Stated, Franklin County, Illinois.² Alvis Taylor married Nancy Neal, daughter of Jeremiah Neal and Elizabeth McCormick, circa 1857 at Franklin County, Illinois.¹ Avis was included in the census of her parents on 6 August 1860 at Webbs Prairie P.O., Franklin County, Illinois.⁴

     Druett O Harelson was also known as Derrett Harelson.³ He was born circa 1841 at Wisconsin.¹ He was the son of Edmond Beagles Harelson and Mary A. Oliver.¹ Druett O Harelson was included in the census of his parents, Edmond Beagles Harelson and Mary A. Oliver, on 17 August 1850 at District 24, Grant County, Wisconsin.¹ Druett O Harelson married Mary E Mcbride on 2 September 1868 at San Joaquin County, California.^2,4 Derrett and Mary Harelson appeared on the census of 13 June 1870 in Oneal (Stocton), San Joaquin County, California.² Druett O Harelson and Mary E Mcbride appeared on the census of 14 June 1880 in O'Neal, San Joaquin County, California.⁵

     Richard Croak was born circa 1841 at Ireland.¹ He married an unknown person on 2 September 1866 at Rock County, Wisconsin.² He was included in the census of Patrick Farrell and Kate Egan on 20 June 1870 at Magnolia, Rock County, Wisconsin.¹

     Fanny M (?) was born circa 1841 at New York.¹ She married John Duncan.¹ Fanny M (?) and John Duncan appeared on the census of 7 June 1880 in Waterloo, Grant County, Wisconsin.¹

     Matthew Edwards was born circa 1841 at Wisconsin.³ He was the son of Matthew Edwards and Ann (?)² Matthew Edwards was included in the census of his parents, Matthew Edwards and Ann (?), on 24 September 1850 at District 24, Grant County, Wisconsin.⁴ Matthew Edwards was a miner when he was included in the census of Ann (?) Edwards on 27 July 1860 at Beetown, Grant County, Wisconsin.⁵

     Dydamy (?) was also known as Didama (?)² She was born circa 1841 at Missouri.¹ She married J. B. McCollum circa 1860 at Missouri.¹ Dydamy (?) and J. B. McCollum appeared on the census of 30 July 1870 in Carroll, Platte County, Missouri.² Dydamy (?) and J. B. McCollum appeared on the census of 8 June 1880 in Washington, Jackson County, Missouri.³

     Eliza Carpenter was born circa 1841 at March, Cambridgeshire, England.² She was the daughter of Mary (?)¹ Eliza Carpenter married Mathew Danzey on 1 October 1862 at Hampshire, England.² Eliza Carpenter and Mathew Danzey appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 in March, Cambridgeshire, Englsnd.²

     Mathew Danzey was born circa 1841 at Elm, Cambridgeshire, England.¹ He married Eliza Carpenter, daughter of Mary (?), on 1 October 1862 at Hampshire, England.¹ Mathew Danzey and Eliza Carpenter appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 in March, Cambridgeshire, Englsnd.¹

     Isabelle "Bettie" Harelson was born in 1841 at Grant County, Wisconsin.^1,3 She was the daughter of Elijah Harelson and Sarah Ann Bowers.² Isabelle "Bettie" Harelson was recorded in the census of Elijah Harelson and Sarah Ann Bowers on 26 August 1850 at Eastern District 24, Grant County, Wisconsin.² She married David Ramsey Reynolds, son of James Reynolds and Martha Rosanna Ramsey, on 11 May 1862 at Grant County, Wisconsin.¹ Bettie and David appeared on the census of 8 August 1870 in Dent, San Joaquin County, California.⁴ Isabelle "Bettie" Harelson and David Ramsey Reynolds appeared on the census of 10 June 1880 in Castoria, San Joaquin County, California; Also listed this census was Anna Smith, a niece, age 16, born in California (1864).⁵ They appeared on the census of 12 June 1900 in Castoria, San Joaquin County, California.⁶ Isabelle "Bettie" Harelson and David Ramsey Reynolds appeared on the census of 2 January 1920 in Precinct 6, Oneal and Stocton Township, San Joaquin County, California.⁷ Isabelle "Bettie" Harelson died in 1923 at San Joaquin County, California.³ She was included in the Biography of David Ramsey Reynolds; The fallowing is from Tinkham, George H., History of San Joaquin County, California , Pages 441-442. For the past sixty-nine years, David R. Reynolds has been a resident of San Joaquin County, and he is naturally most familiar with the history of those early days, his mind bearing the impress of the pioneer annals of the Pacific coast. In San Joaquin County he took up his abode and became influential in the progress and development of his locality.

Mr. Reynolds is a native of Putnam County, Indiana, his birth occurring May 1, 1835, and he was one of five sons born to James and Martha (Ramsey) Reynolds, both natives of Kentucky. The eldest son, Richard, a farmer and miner at French Camp, San Joaquin County, died 1915, being then eighty-three. The other three sons are Eldridge and Edward, twins; and James A., residing at Capitola. His great-grandfather in the Reynolds line was a soldier of the Revolutionary War, and his maternal grandfather displayed equal valor in defending American interests in the second war with England. When David R. Reynolds was in his fourth year his parents removed to Grant County, Wisconsin, becoming pioneers of that district. Wisconsin had not then been admitted to the Union, and amid the wild scenes of frontier life our subject was reared to his eighteenth year, when the family started for California across the plains, being from May until September upon the way. They first settled near the present site of Placerville, but in the fall of 1854 came to San Joaquin County, where the father, James Reynolds, settled upon a ranch near French Camp. He entered land from the Government, and was one of the earliest residents upon what is known as the sand plains. There he remained until his death in 1867, assisting in the pioneer development of the county.

Cutler Salmon, who crossed the plains with the party of which Mr. Reynolds was a member, served in the Black Hawk War in Wisconsin and received from the U. S. Government a claim for 160 acres of land. David R. Reynolds purchased this claim from Mr. Salmon. This was at the time of the second election of Abraham Lincoln to the presidency of the United States and Mr. Lincoln’s name appeared on the deed to Mr. Reynolds. Mr. Reynolds farmed this place from 1855 to 1860, then returned east via Panama to Wisconsin. There on May 11, 1862, he married Miss Isabel Harelson, a schoolmate of his boyhood. In 1864, with his bride, he crossed the plains the second time and located on his ranch where he farmed for fifty-two years before retiring and moving to Stockton. He at first owned 160 acres, but as his financial resources increased he added to this property until he owned 320 acres. In the early days grain ran about fifty bushels to the acre and Mr. Reynolds in addition raised considerable stock which he pastured on the San Joaquin River. He was a member of the Grange and the cause of education and religion received his hearty support, serving for twenty-six years as trustee of the Union school district. Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds are the parents of five children: Melvin E., Clyde H. and Matt C. are deceased; and the two daughters, Henrietta and Gertrude Belle. There are two grandchildren, the children of Clyde H; Gertrude Isabel and M. Clinton. Miss Henrietta Reynolds is widely known for her activity in the restoration of the East Union Cemetery near Manteca. A number of years ago she undertook the plan to restore the church and cemetery to its former beauty and she has worked hard and faithfully among the families of the pioneers and with the aid of the Native Daughters of California, the cemetery has been restored and is a monument to her efforts. A new wire fence has been built and a concrete archway constructed bearing the inscription “Union Cemetery, Memorial to the pioneers of the vicinity.” A memorial tablet on the east side of the arch gives the names and dates of the deceased pioneers, the first name being that of W. O. Lewis who came to California via Mexico in 1846. This almost forgotten burial place of the hardy pioneers now shows signs of loving care and the residents of San Joaquin County owe a lasting debt of gratitude to Miss Reynolds for her efforts in restoring this noted and historic cemetery. Miss Gertrude Belle Reynolds is an elocutionist of exceptional ability and a great favorite at Stockton where she has appeared repeatedly at concerts and entertainments. Perhaps no other of Stockton’s daughters has received as numerous and flattering press notices as has Miss Reynolds.

D. R. Reynolds is one of California’s most honored pioneers. When living at Hangtown, he became acquainted with Mr. J. M. Studebaker, in 1853. Their acquaintance grew into a lasting friendship. Later on Mr. Studebaker went back to his old home at South Bend, Indiana, and then began to build wagons and buggies on an extensive scale. Mr. Studebaker stuck with the gold camp at Hangtown for five years. He did not meet with any great success as a gold-miner, so directed his energies to making wheelbarrows and tunnel cars in a small shop at Hangtown, which was the real beginning of the great Studebaker manufacturing concern, now one of the greatest corporations in the land.

On May 11, 1922, Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of their marriage at their home 745 East Sonora Street, Stockton, which was a happy event in the lives of these old and esteemed pioneers. Mr. Reynolds has a clear mind and a remarkable memory of the events of the early days, his own experience in mining at Hangtown, the depredations of bandits and the swift justice meted out by the Vigilantes. His name should be enduringly inscribed upon the records of the early settlers of San Joaquin County.⁸

     William Gideon Crigler was born in 1841 at Virginia.¹ He married Mary C.
