Marion attended schools in Ventura, and after graduating from Stanford University, returned to Ventura to take over the ranch, growing lemons, walnuts and avocados as well as field crops.
Marion was active in his church as a counselor of youth, church school teacher, choir member, delegate to annual conferences, general conferences, and twice a delegate to World Methodist conferences. He also served as chairman of the board for the Claremont School of Theology.
Active in his community, Marion served as president of both Downtown Lions Club and the Ventura Chamber of Commerce before he was 30 years old. He served on the school board, the Juvenile Justice Commission, Casitas Municipal Water District board, the Ivy Lawn Memorial Park board and was president of the Public Facilities Corp. at the time of the building of the Ventura County Center. He was also on the California State Water Board at the time of the building of the state canal. His hobby was iris growing and breeding and at one time he served as the national president of the American Iris Society.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy; sons Russell (wife Carolyn), Donald (wife Ellen), Philip (wife Katia), and Steven (wife Joan); as well as seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.^7,8 He "Uncle Marion" was a gentleman farmer who was raised on the Cannon family ranch in Ventura, California. The large ranch raised Walnuts, Avocado's, Lemons and cut flowers. He was a graduate of Stanford University and was a loyal alumnus. A strong Democrat, he chair of the Ventura County Democratic Party from 1946 to 1950. He was a candidate for the U.S. House of Representative from California's 11th District in 1950 but was defeated. He later was appointed by the Governor of California to serve on the California State Water Commission. He was a strong Methodist and member of the Lions and Freemasons. Marion was also an Iris breeder seving as Presiden of the American Iris Society (AIS) during the 1950's.⁹
