Pardon "Peter" Taber Tuthill was born on 4 March 1801 at Southhold, Suffolk County, New York.1,2 He was the son of Abraham Tuthill and Rebecca Tabor.2 Peter married Susan Dorcas Englis, daughter of Andrew Richmond Englis and Rachel Moore, on 20 March 1833 at Madison County, Illinois.3,2,4 The Pardon Tuthill family appeared on the census of 1840 in Macoupin County, Illinois.5 Peater and Susan appeared on the census of 19 November 1850 in Alton, Illinois.3 They also appeared on the census of 29 June 1860 in Alton.6 Pardon "Peter" Taber Tuthill was recorded in the census of Emma Virginia Tuthill and James Henry Young on 7 June 1880 at Southold, New York.1 Pardon "Peter" Taber Tuthill Note: The below information was provided by a direct descendant of Susan Dorcas Englis; Nancy Janet Hunt "Pardon Tabor Tuthill and Susan Dorcas Englis were married March 20, 1833 in Madison County, Illinois. They evidently first lived in Cahokia which is just south of Alton and also right on the eastern shore of the Mississippi River (just across the River from St. Louis, Missouri). With the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, this, of course, was one of the earliest settlements in the westward movement. Pardon and Susan probably went there seeking business opportunities. Pardon was a carpenter/builder and thought he could take advantage of building homes for the many people moving west. This was before the railroad system became the main means of travel and commerce and the Mississippi and Missouri rivers were very important to developing the area. Charlotte Ellen Tuthill was born in Cahokia. Pardon first owned (and probably built) the home in Alton which he later, evidently, gave to John Seaton and Charlotte - probably after Susan died - and he continued to live in the home until 1873 when John and Charlotte sold it and re-located to Atchison, Kansas (again seeking business opportunity as part of the westward movement - the Missouri River takes you northwest to Atchison). Pardon moved back to Long Island before 1880 - I have a letter written to John Seaton describing the night Pardon died and also an inventory of his estate which was done in New York. Pardon has a lengthy and colorful ancestry. I have no records showing that Pardon ever lived in Kansas".2

Fitzhugh.
After your grandfather's death, if I recollect aright, the care of your mother and her sister Margaretta devolved very much upon my mother, etc. My father died while president of William and Mary College, and was buried in the chancel of the church in Williamsburg, Va., he being rector as well as president.
My mother, your great aunt, survived him many years; raised all her children and stepchildren to mature years, and happening to be in Williamsburg at the time of her death was buried as close to the wall of the church as could be--in order that she might be as near her husband after death as was possible.
If I have ever done anything in life that is worth doing, it is due to that blessed mother.

He received his own grant in 1834 encompassing 13,328 acres which today is the location of the historic city of Yorba Linda, the birth and burial place of President Richard Nixon. He is remembered most for constructing a huge adobe hacienda in nearby Santa Ana Canyon. He named his land grant "Rancho San Juan Cajon de Santa Ana" and his new residence "San Antonio" after his favorite saint. The spacious two story adobe had over 100 rooms with the rancho having hundreds of employees to tend the vineyards, crops and cattle fed by water from the Santa Ana River marking the first large irrigation system in California. Bernardo liked young women. His first wife 16 year old Maria in five years between marriage and death gave birth to one son and three daughters. He next married fifteen year old Felipa who died giving birth to her twelfth child. His third wife he married by proxy and had a friend travel to Los Angeles on his behalf to take the marriage vows at the historic Plaza Church. Andrea was 29 years younger than her new husband but she bore him four sons. At the age of 57, Don Bernardo Yorba died leaving behind a large and prosperous rancho and twenty children. He was interred in the old Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles. He left the land for a cemetery, the Yorba Cemetery, in his will but it was not ready for a burial until 1862. He and 9 of his family members remained at Calvary until 1923 when they were all moved and reinterred at Yorba cemetery. His second wife, Felipa Dominguez, was one of those moved. His last wife, Andrea Avila, remarried and she is buried along with her second husband in an unmarked grave at the Yorba cemetery".3

Abner P. Winchell1,2

M, b. circa 1802
Last Edited18 Dec 2017
Abner P. Winchell was born circa 1802 at Connecticut.1,3 He married Phoebe (Cynthia?) (?) before September 1834 at Pennsylvania; Abner's wife was listed as "Phoebe" for the 1850 U.S. census and as "Cynthia" thereafter. A death record for a Phoebe Winchell or a marriage record between a Cynthia and Abner was not found making it possible that Phoebe died at some time in the 1850's, Abner married a Cynthia.1 Abner P. Winchell appeared on the census of 1840 in Kingston, Luzerne, Pennsylvania; This census included - Free White Males: U5(3), 20-30(2); Free White Females: 5-10(1), 20-30(1).4 He appeared on the Septennial census of 1849 in Monroe, Wyming County, Pennsylvania.2 He and Phoebe (Cynthia?) (?) appeared on the census of 22 October 1850 in Monroe, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania; This census included a unemployed John Whetaen/Wutain/Martain born about 1796. Was this Pheobe's father?1 Abner P. Winchell and Phoebe (Cynthia?) (?) appeared on the census of 25 July 1860 in Monroe, Wyoming County; For this census, A.P.'s wife is listed as Cynthia (born in circa 1810) which is different from Phoebe (born circa 1814). Therefore, Cynthia could be a second wife and not the mother of A. P.'s children.3 Abner P. Winchell and Phoebe (Cynthia?) (?) also appeared on the census of 15 June 1870 in Monroe.5 By 9 June 1880, Abner P. Winchell was a widower and living in a hotel run by Evan and Mary Drake when he appeared on the census in Monroe; Abner's daughter Mary and husband Peter H. Montross were living next door.6
