Ship name: Donau. Traveling with them was Sophia Kuhlman, age 18.4 Henry and Mary Hogrefe appeared on the census of 9 June 1900 in Cass, Hancock County, Ohio.5 Mary Kuhlman and Conrad Henry Hogrefe appeared on the census of 4 May 1910 in Cass, Hancock County, Ohio.1 Conrad and Mary last appeared together on the census of 14 January 1920 in Cass.6 Mary died on 1 May 1923 at Hancock County, Ohio; From an obituary posted on Find A Grave: " Mrs. Holgrefe was born in Hanover, Germany on Feb. 15, 1843, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kuhlman.      James S Gray was born on 2 February 1843 at Virginia.1,2 He was the son of James Madison Gray and Sarah "Elizabeth?" Cox.2 James S Gray appeared on the census of 3 September 1850 in Morgan County, Kentucky.3 He was included during the census of his parents, James Madison Gray and Sarah "Elizabeth?" Cox, on 3 September 1850 at West Liberty?, Morgan County, Kentucky; What is likely Elizabeth's parents, Tobias and Fanny Cock, are living next door.4,5 James S Gray married Sidney Rowe circa 1863.1 James S Gray and Sidney Rowe appeared on the census of 8 June 1870 in Sandy Hook P.O., Elliott County, Kentucky; This census record included Martin Gillum, age 12, "works on farm".1 James S Gray died on 8 October 1915 at Elliott County, Kentucky, at age 72; Posted at Find-A-Grave: "Commonwealth of Kentucky Certificate of Death # 24140 year 1914 states that James S. Gray, a married white male, aged 72 years 8 months and 1 day died in the Crackersneck voting precinct of Elliott Co., Ky. He was a merchant. He was born in Virginia on Feb 2, 1843 to father Mat Gray born Virginia and to mother Sarah Cox born Virginia. The informant was Sarah Flannery who resides in Newfoundland. The burial was in Grays Cemetery on Oct 9, 1915. The undertaker was W.P. Flanery.

James S. Gray was the son of James Madison Gray (James Madison Gray was married twice; 1st to Elizabeth Cox 1823-1855 and then to Mary Elizabeth Humphrey 1837-1914).

James S. Gray was married to Sidney Rowe and they had three known children: Sarah Gray born ca. 1864 who married a Flannery/Flanery; Alice Gray born ca. 1866 and Robert Lee Gray born ca. July 1870 (and Robert married Susan DeHart)".2 He Find-A-Grave lists James' mother as both Sarah Cox and as Elizabeth Cox. It states that his father was married twice. First to Sarah (or Elizabeth) Cox who appears to die in 1855 and then to Mary Elizabeth Humphrey. The marriage record for James and Sarah/Elizabeth has been interpreted as Elizabeth either Carter and Cocke.2

Joseph Pere Bell Wilmer D.D. and Helena Skipwith.1 Skipwith, listed as Skipple, was included in the census of his parents, George? and Hellen, on 6 June 1860 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; There can be little doubt that this is the Rev. Joseph Willmer. Why was the Rt. Rev. Wilmer listed as Geo. E. Wilmier? (Suthern sympathies?). Helena was listed as Hellen, Skipwith as Skipple,Joseph as Joseph, Helena jr. as Hellen, and William as William. Order of birth and ages match.2 Skipwith Wilmer married Delia Jarvis Tudor, daughter of Frederic Tudor and Euphemia Fenno, on 15 June 1871 at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.1 Skipwith Wilmer appeared on the census of 11 June 1880 in Baltimore City, Maryland; This census included a sister-in-law, Margaret White, age 25, born in Ireland.3 He appeared on the census of 15 June 1900 in Baltimore City, Maryland.4 He died on 12 July 1901 at age 58; Bruial: Green Mount Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland.1 There is some confusion in this 1880 census record. The Helen listed is not Skipwith's wife who would be only about 4 years old, not 30. Where the sister-in-law, Margaret White (born in Ireland) fits in is unknown.3

Hobson and Sarah M.      George Wilmer Brown was born in May 1843 at Virginia.3,4,5 He was the son of Rev Richard Templeman Brown and Marion Rebecca Wilmer.2 He was listed in the census of his parents, Rev Richard Templeman Brown and Marion Rebecca Wilmer, on 11 August 1850 at Smithfield, Jefferson County, Virginia.2 George Wilmer Brown George attended VMI and the fallowing is taken from a letter written to his father from Francis Smith, Superintendent of VMI: Reguards to George Wilmer Brown, Class of 63: "The Fairfax Brigade without its Brigade Major, duly reported for duty on Wednesday morning and they are intiated into all the miseries of the Shanghai step. They seem to be a good hard set & I exect to have much pleasure in making good reports of them. I have placed to your sons credit, $90." The fallowing is from a second letter form VMI in 1860: VMI-2 January 28.1860; Rev.R.T.Brown/ Fairfax Co Va/ MDS - Upon my return from Richmond I found yours & recd (...) letters & the deposit sent by J.W.B. has been duly placed to your son's credit. The (increased?) demerits of your son for the month of Dec.Was the result of his own waywardness & illustrates what we all know with regard to boys, viz. that as they begin to feel older they must show some man (...) Don't be discouraged by such manifestations in your son. Keep your eye constantly upon him, asI have mine. Direct him by your advice & control him by your parental authority, and under the Divine Blessing, this cloud will clear away & you will see him the brighter for the temporary (...) on 5 August 1859 at Fairfax, Virginia.6 He was listed in the census of his mother on 10 September 1860 at Fairfax County, Virginia.7 George ended his military service on 9 April 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia; His service record as given: Enlisted as a Private; Promoted to Full Lieutenant 2nd Class.      Paulina Paschke was born circa June 1843 at Prussia; Age questions! Passinger lists dates of birth seem to indicate the she was only 9 months old. Selection of this Paschke family based on her statement of arrivial date on the 1900 census.1,5 She was the daughter of Johann Paschke and Henrietta (?)3,4 Paulina Paschke was found on a passenger list on 22 October 1860 at New York, New York; USS John Bertram out of Hamburg Germany.4 She married Gotthelf "Gotleib" Traugott Blase, son of Johann Blese and Beate Luise Drewitz, before 1862.1 Paulina Paschke and Gotthelf "Gotleib" Traugott Blase appeared on the census of 10 June 1870 in Milford, Jefferson County, Wisconsin.1 Paulina Paschke was included in the census of Gotthelf "Gotleib" Traugott Blase on 14 June 1880 at Watertown, Jefferson County, Wisconsin.6 Paulina Paschke was included in the census of Gotthelf "Gotleib" Traugott Blase on 1 June 1900 at Farmington, Jefferson County, Wisconsin.5

     Daniel Pratt was born between April 1843 and June 1843 at March, Cambridgeshire, England.1,2 He was christened on 2 July 1843 at Wisbech.3 He was the son of Ambrose Wolfe Pratt Sr. and Elizabeth "Betsy" Ablett.1 Daniel appeared in the census of his parents, Ambrose Wolfe Pratt Sr. and Elizabeth "Betsy" Ablett, on 30 March 1851 at Wisbech St. Peter, Cambridgeshire; That census indicated that Ambrose Pratt was Born in Cambridgeshire,"March" and that the family was still living at 35 South Bank.1 Working as an agricultural laborer, Daniel Pratt appeared lodging in the home of Richard Barnes for the census of 15 April 1861 at 29 English Drove, Thorney, Cambridgeshire.4 On 23 December 1866Daniel Pratt married Harriet Marchant, daughter of Robert Marchant and Ann Alderman Dickerson, they were married at Thorney.5,6,7 Daniel and Harriet were living next door to Harriet's parents when the appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 in Thorney, Cambridgeshire, England; Daniel was also listed as an agricultural laborer.8 They appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 also in Thorney.5 Daniel and Harriet appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 also in Thorney.9 On 21 March 1901, Daniel and Harriet appeared on the census at 22 Wisbech Road, Thorney.10 They continued living at 22 Wisbech Road, Thorney, for the census of 2 April 1911.11

     William Gould was born on 25 July 1843 at St Giles without Cripplegate, London, England.1,3,2 He was the son of William Gould and Elizabeth (?)2 William Gould was baptized on 13 January 1844.2 He married Emma Theresa Henderson, daughter of Alexander Henderson and Jane E. (?), circa 1871 at Ohio.3 William Gould and Emma Theresa Henderson appeared on the census of 12 June 1880 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.3 William Gould and Emma Theresa Henderson appeared on the census of 1 June 1900 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.4 William and Emma appeared on the census of 16 April 1910 in Toledo, Ohio.5 William Gould died circa 1921.1

     Sanford Dallas Embrey was born on 29 July 1843 at Culpeper County, Virginia.1 He was the son of Stanton Glass Embrey and Mary Delia Miller.1 Sanford Dallas Embrey was included in the census of his parents, Stanton Glass Embrey and Mary Delia Miller, on 3 October 1850 at Ashbys, Fauquier County, Virginia.2 Sanford Dallas Embrey married Cassandra Dalvinia Gay on 16 January 1868.1 Sanford Dallas Embrey and Cassandra Dalvinia Gay appeared on the census of 29 July 1870 in Madison, Orange County, Virginia.3 Sandford and Cassandra also appeared on the census of 9 June 1880 in Rappahannock, Fauquier County, Virginia.4 Sandford appeared as a widower on the census of 13 June 1900 in Remington, Fauquier County, Virginia.5 He also appeared on the census of 15 April 1910 in Lee, Fauquier County, Virginia.6 Sandford last appeared on the census of 26 January 1920 in Lee, Fauquier County, Virginia.7 Sanford Dallas Embrey died on 15 March 1924 at Farquier County, Virginia, at age 80.1
