This is a brief summary of Katherine Wurschmidt's father, as told to David Wurschmidt by Henry Bach on one of his visits to Chico(CA). Editing and correcting done by Christine Wurschmidt Licker, 6 Jul 2009. Corrections will be marked by an asterisk (*).
Nicholas Bach was born in Grosslangenfeld*, Rhineland Germany, on 20 August 1820. He was one of several children of Nicholas Bach and Elizabeth Cremer* of Grosslangenfeld. His parents are buried there. Nick had a brother,Bernard, who also came to the U.S.,married Lucy Keppers and settled in Stearns Co. Minnesota.* In 1853 he married a Miss Lewis (Elizabeth Lowen or Louen*) in Grosslangenfeld. Their first son, Michael, was born at Leutzkampen in the Eifel region of Rhineland, Germany, 22 Feb 1855. Sometime after Michael's birth, they left Germany and set out for America. They settled in Racine, Wisconsin. Here Nick worked at common labor. They must have been thrifty, because by the spring of 1857 he had acquired a team of oxen. Their second son, Peter was born during this time, in 1856 or 1857.
They departed for Minnesota where they squatted on 160 acres in the St. Cloud/Avon region of Stearns Co*. Squatting on unoccupied land was customary because no surveying had yet been done. Nick cleared a few acres of the land and built a cabin to live in and then with his team of oxen and a covered wagon engaged in hauling freight: probably for the Hudson Bay Company. His farm was located on the main road from St. Paul to Georgetown,MN which was the southernmost outpost of the Hudson Bay Company. In the spring, after hay for the stock was planted, he would set out for St. Paul, a distance of 50 miles, and load up for the trip north. Then, together with a caravan of freight wagons, escorted by a company of U.S. Cavalry soldiers, the procession would proceed past his home and on to Georgetown on the Red River in Minnesota. There were as yet no boats hauling freight on the Red River. These trips kept him away from his family for at least three months at a time. During this period, three more children were born to Nick and Elizabeth: Bernard (Barney), Margarite (Maggie) and Mattias (Mat).
About 1870 the Catholic Church obtained a grant for the land he was on in order to build a college. They offered him 160 acres in exchange, located at the town of New Munich (Stearns Co), which he accepted. [Note: I have been in contact with the archivist at what is now called Saint John's University. Apparently no records remain which would confirm or deny this story, but more research should be done through the Stearns County property rolls.] The family moved to the new location, but in 1871 his wife, (the first Elizabeth), died leaving him with 5 children.
Two years later, in 1873, he married a young widow with three daughters whose names were Louisa, Marie and Minnie (Philomine) Gnaden. His new wife, was Elizabeth Gnaden*. She was born in Alpthal* Switzerland, and her family name was Tschimperle*. She came with her parents to St. Paul, Minnesota along with two sisters and two brothers. Her siblings were Frank, August, Caroline and Philomine.
Caroline was married to Joseph Kaley, also from Switzerland. They lived in Lake Minnetonka (Carver Co?). They had 11 children by 1880, when they lived in Laketown Minnesota.
Philomine was married to Charles Finken--born Switzerland, 1850. They lived in Oak Township, Stearns Co, MN. In 1880 they had 4 sons and 2 daughters.
Elizabeth Tschimperle's first husband was a Mr.Gnaden, who had been a brewer, or possibly a builder of breweries. He died young, in 1870, leaving his wife with three daughters. Three years later she met and married Nicholas Bach. She said she "jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire." Their children are: Henry Bach b. New Munich 18 Aug 1876; Elizabeth (Lizzie) b. North Dakota Terr. 1878; and Katherine (Grandma Kate) b. Grand Forks, North Dakota Terr. 27 Sep 1880. The family moved to Grand Forks N.D. in 1877. Henry married Rose Catini and moved to a homestead in New Berg N.D. in 1903. Henry's childen: Roy, Walter, Liman(?-not legible), Marie, Arnold and Lloyd. Lizzie was married and spent her life in Canada-possibly Manitoba. Katherine married Cornelius Wurschmidt and had the following children: Leopold Cornelius, 13 Dec 1900; William David, 15 Nov 1903; Melwyn Henry, 28 Sep 1911; Conrad Vernon, 8 Nov 1913; Ione Louise, 16 Jun 1915; Gervis Neal, 20 Jan 1922.8

Simeon Davenport Armstrong was born on 19 February 1825 at Norris, Virginia.2,1 He was the son of John Armstrong and Cynthia Davenport Spilman. Simeon Davenport Armstrong was listed as a male under 5 in the census of John Armstrong in 1830 at Culpeper County, Virginia; "The John Armstrongs census record was "Free White Males: U5(1), 5-9(1), 10-14(1), 20-29(1), 50-59(1); Free White Females: 10-14(1), 50-59(1). The census includes 10 slaves".3 Simeon Davenport Armstrong married Sarah Ann Norris, daughter of Thomas Norris and Lucinda (?), on 12 December 1849 at Fauquier County, Virginia.1,4,5 Simeon was listed in the census of his wife's parents Thomas Norris on 16 August 1850 at Turners, Fauquier County, Virginia; This Census included Ellen Norris age 65 and Hannah Robinson also 65.6 He was also recorded in census of inlaws Thomas Norris on 1 August 1860 at Warrenton, Fauquier County, Virginia.7 He was recorded in census of his father-in-law on 23 July 1870 at Upperville PO, Center Township, Fauquier County, Virginia.8 Simeon and Sarah appeared on the census of 9 June 1880 in Center, Fauquier County, Virginia; This census has an additional interesting entries. Mary Robinson, Cousin!9 Simeon Davenport Armstrong appeared on the census of 13 June 1900 in Center District, Fauquier County, Virginia.10 He died on 8 July 1904 at Fauquier County, Virginia, at age 79; Simeon is buried in the Armstrong-Leach Cemetery at Warrenton,Located between Bethel and Little Georgetown, about an eighth of a mile southeast of Route 628 in the bend of Route 674. Obviously, the date on the marker has been incorrectly transcribed. The year of death as transcribed from his headson indicates that he died in 1864. However, since Simeon is definately still alive and kicking in 1900. I have assumed that the year is probably 1904.11

Samuel Edmonston was born on 5 June 1825 at Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1 He was the son of Francis Edmonston and Janet Emmerson.1 Samuel Edmonston was recorded in the census of Francis Edmonston and Janet Emmerson on 6 June 1841 at 60 North Bridge, Endinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.2 Samuel Edmonston was recorded in the census of Francis Edmonston and Janet Emmerson on 31 March 1851 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland; Occupation Engraver (master Emps 4 Men.)3 Samuel Edmonston was recorded in the census of Francis Edmonston and Janet Emmerson on 8 April 1861 at 17 London Street, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.4 Samuel Edmonston married Jane/Janet Young Douglas, daughter of William Douglas and Anne Oliver Bruce, on 25 November 1863 at Edinburgh Parish, Duddingston, Midlothian, Scotland.1,5 A biography of William and his father provides the fallowing: William Douglas Edmonston, artist and scientist, now in charge of the Unites States Entomological Bureau at Colorado Springs, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1870. His father, Samuel Edmonston, was also a native of that city, born in the year 1823, and in Scotland he married Miss Jane Young Douglas. Following the birth of their son, William Douglas, they came to the United States, making their way to Denver, Colorado, and later taking up in their abode at Larkspur, where both passed away, the father dying in the year 1904, while the mother’s death occurred in 1910. The father possessed considerable artistic skill, painting pictures of merit but only for his own pleasure, as his patrimony was sufficient to supply his wants. William Douglas Edmonston pursued his education in the schools of his native city and was graduated from the Royal School of Arts of Edinburgh with the class of 1887. He devoted his time and attention to art until 1893 and then took charge of a tract of land in Douglas county, Colorado, for English owners, remaining in that business connection until 1901, when he entered the government service as agent of the general land office. In 1905 he was transferred to the forest service and in 1910 was given a position in the entomological department. He is now in charge of the station of Colorado Springs, which is headquarters for work of this character for Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona. He has attained thoroughness and proficiency in this science, as he did in art, and his work is of a valuable character. In 1896, at Castle Rock, Colorado, Mr. Edmonston was married to Miss Laura M. Kenner, a daughter of the late John Kenner, who came to Colorado in 1859. Mr. and Mrs. Edmonston are the parents of two children: Gladys Hampton, the wife of Howard E Cox, of Denver, by whom she has one child, Roberta May Cox; and Samuel Maxwell Edmonston, born in 1898. The religious faith of the family is that of the Presbyterian church and in political belief Mr. Edmonston is a republican. He belongs to the Colorado Springs Art Society and outside of his official duties concentrates his time and attention upon art. He has produced some very attractive and valuable canvases and had five paintings on exhibition in the art exposition which was held in the Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs in July, 1918. His powers in this direction have constantly developed and his native talents now find expression in mostfinished and pleasing work.6
