     Preston Steele was born on 1 March 1838 at Whitley County, Kentucky.^1,2 He was the son of Jonas Steele and Elizabeth Grubb.¹ Preston Steele began military service on 1 November 1861 at Camp Lee, Kentucky; He joined Company F, 16th Kentucky Regiment.³ He died on 3 February 1863 at Whitley County, Kentucky, at age 24; Died of what probably what was Dysentery contracted during the war.² He Posted on Find-A-Grave: Preston enlisted in the Union Army on 1 November 1861 for a tour of duty of 3 years. He mustered into service at Camp Lee, Kentucky on 27 January 1862 joining Company F of the Kentucky 16th Regiment. Records describe him as 23 years of age, 5'10" tall, dark complexion, blue eyes and light hair. It states that he was born in Whitley County, Kentucky and his occupation was farmer; During Preston's time in the war the Kentucky 16th spent all of its time on duties in Kentucky and did see combat especially late in the year when they went into operations against Gen. John Hunt Morgan from 22 December 1862 to 2 January 1863. Afterwards the 16th moved to Lebanon, Kentucky where they remained until Preston's death; According to official military records Preston was listed as deserting or being "Absent Without Leave" (AWOL) as of 24 January 1863. He left camp at Lebanon, KY and made his way nearly 100 miles to his home near Corbin, KY where he would die on 3 February 1863 only 10 days after leaving camp. The cause of death listed in county and military records was "Chronic Diarrhea (dysentery)". It would appear that Preston was suffering from the ailment prior to his departure from camp and most likely was trying to get home to be treated. Military doctors at the time had little understanding of the cause or treatment for the condition and Preston may have felt that he would fair better at home; On 7 November 1885, Preston's mother Elizabeth Grubb-Steele filed a pension request in the name of her son. As a result of this pension request the Adjutant General's Office evaluated Preston's status as a deserter. Their findings of 20 April 1887 stated "The charge of desertion of 24 January 1863 was removed...the soldier was absent without proper authority and died while at home". Preston was placed on the official "Casualty Sheet" as having died from disease during the war.³

     Ruhama Wetzel was born on 26 March 1838.¹ She married Zachary Taylor Tilman, son of Thomas Willis Tilman and Teresa Morris, on 5 June 1859.¹ Ruhama Wetzel and Zachary Taylor Tilman appeared on the census of 19 June 1860 in Lewis County, Virginia.² Zachariah and Ruhama appeared on the census of 14 September 1870 in Lincoln, Lewis County, West Virginia.³ Ruhama Wetzel and Zachary Taylor Tilman appeared on the census of 8 June 1880 in Skin Creek, Lewis County, West Virginia; This census included Ruhama's cousin Emanuel Whitzel, age 39.⁴ They last appeared together on the census of 28 June 1900 in Skin Creek, Lewis County, West Virginia.⁵ Ruhama Wetzel died on 16 June 1917 at age 79.¹

     Margaret Frances Harrelson was born on 13 December 1838 at Tennessee.² She married George W Robinson on 2 August 1853 at Jackson County, Missouri.² Margaret Frances Harrelson married Samuel Lusk on 4 March 1867.² Margaret Frances Harrelson married Abbott (?) on 12 October 1874 at Lafayette County, Missouri.² Margaret Frances Harrelson married Thomas J Courtland on 7 November 1878 at Saline County, Missouri.² Margaret Frances Harrelson died on 5 August 1917 at age 78; Posted at Find-A-Grave "Margaret Frances Harralson married George W. Robinson on 2 August 1853 in Jackson County, Missouri. George W. Robinson was captured by Union Troops and executed in Saline County, Arkansas". Also Posted at Find-A-Grave "Margaret also married the following: Samuel Lusk - 4 March 1867 in Jackson County, Missouri, Abbott Page - 12 October 1874 in Lafayette County, Missouri, Thomas J. Courtland - 7 November 1878 in Saline County, Missouri".² She The 1880 US Census lists daughter Mattie's age as 13. If that were true, Mattie may well have been a "Lusk" rather than a "Robinson".³

     Mark Hardin Railey was born on 17 December 1838 at Kentucky.¹ He was the son of Lewis C Railey and Susan Hardin.² Mark and his brothers, Martin and Lewis, appeared on the census of 23 June 1860 in Atchison, Atchison County, Kansas Territory.³ Mark Hardin Railey married Martha Randolph "Pattie?" Slaughter, daughter of John Hord Slaughter and Sarah Pleasants Webster, on 15 January 1868 at DeWitt County, Texas.^1,4 Mark Hardin Railey and Martha Randolph "Pattie?" Slaughter appeared on the census of 1 June 1870 in Precinct 1, DeWitt County, Texas.¹

     John Warner was born circa 1839 at Pennsylvania.² He married Matilda Ann Pool, daughter of Henry Jackson Pool and Mary Steele, on 30 May 1870 at Sonoma County, California.¹ John Warner and Matilda Ann Pool appeared on the census of 29 July 1870 in Indian, Plumas County, California.³ John Warner and Matilda Ann Pool appeared on the census of 18 June 1880 in South Fork, Humboldt County, California.⁴

     Johnathan D Bailey was also known as Jonathan D. Bailey Listed as J.D. Bailey in the obituary of C.P. Jones.^3,4 He was born in 1833 at North Carolina.¹ He was born circa 1839 at North Carolina.⁴ He was the son of James H. Bailey and Lydia Jones.¹ Johnathan D Bailey was recorded in the census of Lydia Jones on 30 October 1850 at Prairie, Randolph County, Missouri.¹ Johnathan D Bailey married Mary Elizabeth Boucher, daughter of Robert Boucher and Elizabeth Wilcoxen, on 1 November 1866 at Randolph County, Missouri.^5,6 Johnathan D Bailey appeared on the census of 3 June 1870 in Moberly, Randolph County, Missouri.⁵ He and Mary Elizabeth Boucher appeared on the census of 4 June 1900 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.⁷ Johnathan D Bailey was included during the census of his Daughter "Bettie" and son-in-law Gilbert Blanchard on 16 April 1910 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California; This census included a niece, Irene Bailey, age 14, born in California.² He

Note: The FamilySearch entry for Jonathan Denney Bailey (K835-RGW) links his Parents to William Frances Bailey and Lucinda Youngblood. I believe this to be in error. My research finds that "Jonathan" D Bailey was born to James H Bailey and Lydia Jones in North Carolina. James and Lydia were married circa 1833 in Guilford County, North Carolina. While James H Bailey never appears in Morbely, Randolph County, Missouri, Lidy (Lydia), obviously a widow, is present on the 1850 census for Moberly. In her houshold is her son "Jonathan Baily" and her mother Pricella Jones (my 3rd Great-Grandmother). There is a marriage record for the marriage of "Johnathan Bailey and Mary Elizabeth Boucher on 1 Nov 1866 in Randolph County and "Jonathan" and Mary E. Bailey do appear with their oldest child, James R Bailey, on the 1870 census in Randolph County. While "Jonathan" doesn't appear on the 1880 census in Moberly, Mary E Bailey does appear without husband but with her children, James R, Charls R, William E, Mary B, Letha L, and Cora L.. As to where "Jonathan" is in 1880 is at yet to be determined. In 1900 he and Elizabeth appera with their two youngest in Los Angeles. In 1910 they appear in the home of their son-in-law, Gilbert Blanchard. Why the 1900 census lists his birth location Iliois is puzzeling but certainly in error. The 1910 birth location of North Carolina cements his parantage to the North Carolina James Bailey-Lydia Jones connection.⁸

     Andrew McDuff was born circa 1839 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.² He married Elizabeth B. Douglas, daughter of William Douglas and Anne Oliver Bruce, on 29 December 1865 at Duddingston, Midlothian, Scotland.¹ Andrew McDuff was included in the census of Elizabeth B. Douglas on 3 April 1871 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.² Andrew McDuff was included in the census of Elizabeth B. Douglas on 6 April 1891 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland; Andrew lists his occupation as "Marble Mason."³

     Mary J. (?) was born circa 1839 at Michigan.¹ She married William R(alph) Pitt, son of Samuel Pitt and Mary P. (?), circa 1855 at Michigan.¹ Mary J. (?) and William R(alph) Pitt appeared on the census of 2 July 1870 in Pilot, Cherokee County, Iowa.¹ Mary J. (?) and William R(alph) Pitt appeared on the census of 1885 in Whitman County, Washington.³ Mary J. (?) and William R(alph) Pitt appeared on the census of 8 June 1900 in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California.⁴

     Mary J (?) was born circa 1839 at Missouri.¹ She married John T. Kimbrough at Missouri.^1,2

     Edward S. Hutter was born circa 1839 at Virginia. He married Nannie L. (?) circa 1864 at Virginia.¹ Edward S. Hutter appeared on the census of 11 June 1900 in Ward 1, Lynchburg, Virginia; i.¹

     Deborah Jones was born circa 1839 at Illinois.¹ She married Tillman Bethel, son of Chester Bethel and Jane Jones, circa 1857 at Illinoise.¹ Deborah Jones was included in the census of Tillman Bethel on 13 August 1860 at Richwood, Jersey County, Illinois.³ Deborah Jones was included in the census of Tillman Bethel on 3 August 1870 at Township 7 Range 13, Jersey County, Illinois.¹

     Elizabeth Flanary was born circa 1839 at Virginia.¹ She was the daughter of Silas Flanary and Martha (?)¹ Elizabeth Flanary was included in the census of Silas Flanary on 22 August 1850 at District 31, Lee County, Virginia; This cencus included Sylvesta Flanery a 38 year old female (sister?).¹ Elizabeth Flanary married (?) Penington circa 1860 at Virginia.² Elizabeth Pennington was included in the census of her parents, Silas and Martha Flanery, on 25 August 1870 at Yocum Station, Lee County, Virginia.³ Elizabeth Flanary was included in the census of Silas Flanary and Martha (?) on 14 June 1880 at Yocum Station, Virginia.² Elizabeth was included in the census of her son-in-law and daughter, Elbert Flanary and Emily R. Penington, on 14 June 1900 at Dryden, Lee County, Virginia.⁴ Elizabeth Pennington (age 90) was included in the census of her daughter Emily R. Penington Flanary on 2 April 1930 at Yokum Station, Lee County, Virginia.⁵

     Dorcas F. Hatheway was born circa 1839 at Maine.¹ She was the daughter of Isreal Hatheway.² Dorcas F. Hatheway appeared on the census her father, Isreal Hatheway, of 29 August 1850 in Cutler, Washington County, Maine.² Dorcas F. Hatheway married John A. Dwelley, son of Stephen Dwelley and Phebe Smith, circa 1857 at Maine.¹ John and Dorcus Dwelly appeared on the census of 12 June 1860 in East Michias, Washington County, Maine.¹

     John Q. Brink was born circa 1839 at Ohio.¹ He married Mary J. (?) after 1850 at Ohio.¹ John Q. Brink and Mary J. (?) appeared on the census of 21 June 1870 in Hughes, Nodaway County, Missouri.¹ John and Mary appeared on the census of 17 June 1880 in Graham, Nodaway County, Missouir.²

     Nancy E. Johnson was born circa 1839.¹ She married John Haynes Bohart, son of Peter Bohart and Nancy Clegg, before 1860.¹

     Artelia (?) was born circa 1839 at Tennessee.¹ She married Eliab B. Cantrell, son of William Riley Cantrell and Constance Maude Magness, circa 1853 at Tennessee.¹ Artelia (?) and Eliab B. Cantrell appeared on the census of 9 July 1860 in Smithville P.O., DeKalb County, Tennessee.¹ Artelia Cantrell appeared by herself as head of household on the census of 16 August 1870 in Smithville P.O., DeKalb County, Tennessee.²

     Nancy Neal was born circa 1839 at Illinois.² She was the daughter of Jeremiah Neal and Elizabeth McCormick.² Nancy Neal married Alvis Taylor, son of Jesse Taylor and Nancy Hill, circa 1857 at Franklin County, Illinois.² Nancy Neal appeared as Nancy Clayton on the census of 18 July 1870 in Frankfort, Franklin County, Illinois.³

     Mary Ellen Overton was born circa 1839.¹ She was the daughter of Francis Davis Overton and Elizabeth "Betsy" C. Glover.² Mary Ellen married James Henry Young, son of Ezra K. Young and Maria Clark, in April 1864 at New York.^1,2 Mary Ellen Overton died on 6 February 1865 at Southold, New York.^1,2

     Mary J. Rieff was also known as Riffe.¹ She was born circa 1839 at Arkansas.¹ She was the daughter of Orin M. Rieff and Matilda (?)² Mary J. Rieff appeared with her parents, O.M. and Matilda Rieff, on the census of 4 December 1850 in West Fork, Washington County, Arkansas.² Mary also appeared on the census her parents of 30 August 1860 in White River, Washinngton County, Arkansas.³ She married Mary J. Rieff circa 1869 at Arkansas.¹ She and James Evans appeared on the census of 2 August 1870 in Highland P.O., Collin County, Texas.⁴ Mary J. Rieff and James Evans appeared on the census of 12 June 1880 in White River, Washington County, Arkansas.⁵

     Martha J Patterson was born circa 1839 at Georgia.¹ She married Henry Francis Bolinger, son of Peter Bolinger and Catherine Haynes, on 28 February 1850 at Calhoun Conty, Alabama.^1,2 Martha J Patterson and Henry Francis Bolinger appeared on the census of 19 July 1860 in Port Sillarin, Milam County, Texas.¹ Martha J Patterson died after 1870 at Texas.³

     Margaret Ellen Albin was born circa 1839 at Indiana.^1,2 She married Benajah "Benjamin" Hoover, son of Jesse Hoover and Rebecca Yount, circa 1866 at Iowa.¹ Margaret Ellen Albin and Benajah "Benjamin" Hoover appeared on the census of 12 June 1880 in Springdale, Cedar County, Iowa.² A widowed Margaret Hoover was included in the census of her son and daughter-in-law, George and Ruth Hoover on 8 June 1900 at Springdale, Cedar County, Iowa.³ She was also included in the census of son and daugher-in-law on 16 April 1910 at Springdale.⁴ Margaret was still with George and Ruth for the census on 7 January 1920 at Springdale, Iowa.⁵ Margaret Ellen Albin died in 1924 at Springdale, Cedar County, Iowa.¹

     Richard Cahill was born circa 1839 at Ireland.^1,2 He was the son of John Cahill and Mary Purcell.^3,4 Richard Cahill married Mary L McStott circa 1864 at Minnesota.² Richard Cahill and Mary L McStott appeared next door to his brother John on the census of 15 July 1870 in Janesville, Waseca County, Minnesota.³ Richard and Mary Cahill appeared on the census of 10 June 1880 in Janesville, Waseca County, Minnesota.² Richard was included in the census of son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Thresea Cahill, on 20 April 1910 at Janesville, Waseca County, Minnesota. Interestingly, they are living next to Richards wife, Mary, both of which are listed as widowed?⁵

     C. C. Williams was born circa 1839 at New York.¹ He married Mary J. Jocelyn, daughter of Joseph B. Jocelyn and Mary A. (?), circa 1868 at New York.¹ C. C. Williams was included in the census of Joseph B. Jocelyn and Mary A. (?) on 21 August 1870 at Rockland, Sullivan County, New York.¹ C. C. Williams and Mary J. Jocelyn appeared on the census of 8 June 1880 in Oneonta, Otsego County, New York.²

     Nancy J. (?) was born circa 1839 at Kentucky.¹ She married Z. L. Tripp, son of David Tripp, circa 1856 at Kentucky.¹ Nancy J. (?) and Z. L. Tripp appeared on the census of 10 July 1860 in Morganfield P.O., Union County, Kentucky.¹

     Dr. Alfred Edwin Slaughter was born circa 1839 at Virginia.¹ He was the son of Dr Thomas Towles Slaughter and Jane Madison Chapman.¹ Dr. Alfred Edwin Slaughter married Eugenie Taylor, daughter of Robert Taylor and Barbara Whitman, on 10 November 1869 at Gordonsville, Orange County, Virginia.^2,3 Dr. Alfred Edwin Slaughter and Eugenie Taylor appeared on the census of 8 July 1870 in Madison, Orange County, Virginia; This census included John V. Craven, Apothecary.⁴ Alfred and Eugenie appeared on the census of 11 June 1880 in Gordonsville, Orange County, Virginia.⁵ Dr. Alfred Edwin Slaughter died on 11 January 1883 at Gordonsville, Orange County, Virginia.⁶

     Mariah/Maria Dodge was born circa 1839 at Ohio.³ She married Elisha Barten Steed, son of Henry Steed and Matilda (?), on 18 August 1859 at Lawrence County, Ohio.^4,2 Mariah/Maria Dodge and Elisha Barten Steed appeared on the census of 11 June 1860 in Perry Township, Lawrence County, Ohio.⁵ Mariah/Maria Dodge and Elisha Barten Steed appeared on the census of 15 June 1880 in Perry, Lawrence County, Ohio; The 1890 census included grandson Edgar Steed, age 0, and Mother-In-Law, Almire Fisher.³ Mariah/Maria Dodge died before 1900; Husband Barton was listed as a widower on the 1900 census.⁴

     Newton Waddle was born circa 1839 at Virgina.² He was the son of Fanns Waddle and Nancy (?)² Newton Waddle married Mary E Finley, daughter of James Finley and Rebecca (?), on 25 January 1864 at Wythe County, Virginia.¹ Newton Waddle and Mary E Finley appeared on the census of 11 July 1870 in Seddon, Bland County, Virginia.³ They appeared on the census of 12 June 1880 in Seddon, Bland County, Virginia.²

     Mary Evans was born in 1839 at Arkansas.¹ She was the daughter of James Evans and Sarah Mankins.³ Mary Evans was included in the census of Samuel Hannah and Sarah Mankins on 6 November 1850 at White River, Washing County, Arkansas.⁴ Mary Evans married Griffith Dickerson "Dick" Steele, son of Alexander Pleasant Steele and Sarah B. Dickerson, on 2 June 1856 at Washington County, Arkansas. One of Eliza "Gram" Steele's stories concerned the Red River Valley in Arkansas where Dick married Mary and perhaps taught school. That time must have been important to Dick to have passed it on to "Gram."^5,6,2 Mary Evans was included in the census of Alexander Pleasant Steele and Sarah B. Dickerson on 17 July 1860 at Sni a bar, Jackson County.¹ Mary Evans died after 7 December 1863 Griffith was listed as married on his 7 Dec 1863 Civil War Draft Registration.^7,8

     Nancy C Townes was born in 1839 at Illinois.¹ She was the daughter of Robert T. Townes and Margaret Crawford.^3,4 Nancy C. Townes was included in the census of her mother Margaret Townes on 18 October 1850 at Franklin County, Illinois.³ Nancy C Townes married Richard Cantrell, son of Larkin Cantrell and Eunice Moberly, on 11 August 1867.^1,2 Nancy C Townes and Richard Cantrell appeared on the census of 18 July 1870 in Frankfort, Franklin County, Illinois.^5,2 They appeared on the census of 5 July 1880 in Frankfort, Franklin County, Illinois.^6,2

     Henry Darby was born in 1839 at New York.¹ He was the son of Edward Darby and Harriet A. Wells.² Henry Darby was recorded in census of Edward Darby and Harriet A. Wells on 8 April 1860 at Vernon, Lake County, Illinois.² Henry Darby married Samanthan Jane "Mattie J" Moore before 1870.³ Henry Darby and Samanthan Jane "Mattie J" Moore appeared on the census of 11 August 1870 in Vernon, Lake County, Illinois.³ Henry Darby and Samanthan Jane "Mattie J" Moore appeared on the census of 11 June 1880 in Vernon, Lake County, Illinois.⁴

     Margaret Armstrong was born in 1839 at Georgia.¹ She was the daughter of James Watson Armstrong and Jane Richard Fielder.¹ Margaret Armstrong was included in the census of her parents, James Watson Armstrong and Jane Richard Fielder, on 6 September 1850 at Militia Distric 483, Bibb County, Georgia.² Margaret Armstrong married Frederick L. Villepique on 19 April 1860 at Presbyterian Church, Bibb County, Geogria.^3,4 Interesting, Margaret was also recorded in the census of her father on 19 July 1860 at Macon, Gerogia.⁵ F.L. and M.W. Villepique appeared on the census of 23 July 1860 in Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida.⁶ Margaret Villepique and her children, Jane and Harry, were included in the census of her mother on 11 July 1870 at Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.³ Margaret and her children were also with her mother for the census of on 3 June 1880 at Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.⁷ According to Dallas Phelps, Frederick L. Villepigue served as Florida's Secretary of State and was separated from his wife who returned to her home state Georgia with her two children by 1870. According to LaShella Kirkland, Frederick L. Villepigue was born at Camden, Kershaw Co., S.C. and died after 1870 Jefferson Co., Florida.⁴

     Martha K. (?) was born in 1839 at Illinois.¹ She married Aaron Neal, son of Moses Neal and Priscilla Smothers, circa 1855 at Franklin County, Illinois.¹ Martha K. (?) and Aaron Neal appeared on the census of 20 June 1860 in Township 7 S Range 3 E, Franklin County, Illinois.¹

     Mary E. (?) was born in 1839 at Tennessee.¹ She married Robert McCollum, son of James McCollum and Lydia Ann Lewis, in 1853 at Illinois.¹ Mary E. (?) and Robert McCollum appeared on the census of 22 August 1860 in Clay County, Illinois.¹

     Eliza (?) was born in 1839 at Wales.¹ She married Iaasc Voorhees, son of Elisha Voorhees and Nancy (?), in 1854.¹ Eliza (?) and Iaasc Voorhees appeared on the census of 1 June 1860 in Manti, Sanpete County, Utah.¹

     Alvin Timmerman was born in 1839 at New York.² He was the son of Abram Timmerman and Maria Dievendorff.^3,4 Alvin Timmerman was recorded in the census of John Dievendorff and Maria (?) on 7 September 1850 at Minden, Montgomery County, New York.⁴ Alvin Timmerman married Mary Phillips circa 1862 at New York.²
