William Joseph Pratt was born on 23 July 1871 at Walker Township, Kent County, Michigan; His birth was recorded 24 May, 1872, in Liber1 of Records of Birth for Kent County on page 283.4 He was the son of Uriah Hitite Pratt and Mary Ann Brown.3 His mother having died in May, Bill was recorded in his widowed father's household during the U.S. census on 2 June 1880; The 1880 census listed him as a farmer. the household also included a house keeper, Roxania Smith (age 64) born in New York.5 William Joseph Pratt After the birth of Uriah's and secon wife Arminda's second child, for what ever reason, Will was essentially ejected from the Uriah Pratt house hold. Sinsce there was still snow on the ground, this must have occured in early spring. As a result, Will spent several mounths living in a corn crib stealing milk from his father's cow to survive. At that point, a kindly neighbor took him in. Bill's wife Mollie never forgave Uriah for his treatment of her husband.6 How or why he got there, by 1894, Will was living at at 7050 Jefferson Ave., Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.7 For health reasons (which may have been the early beginnings of the intestinal problems, including appendicitis, which eventually killed him) he and two friends floated the Mississippi River on a raft. in 1895. Will documented some of this trip in a brief diary.8,6 He met and married Amalie "Mollie" Auguste Albrecht, daughter of Carl Wilhelm Albrecht and Louise Augusta Justine Jeanette Gomoll, on 26 March 1896 at Hyde Park, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.9,10 Mollie and Bill were appeared on the census of 13 June 1900 in Chicago; City of Chicago, Thirty-second ward; 43 Precinct.11 As of after 1902, the address of William Joseph Pratt was 1208 Garfield, Belvidere, Boone County, Illinois.12 Some time between 1900 and 1903, Mollie and Bill left Chicago and moved to at Belvidere, Boone County, Illinios; This move was reflected in the fact that their son Bill was born in Chicago while son Norman was born in Belvidere.13 Bill and Mollie appeared in census of 17 April 1910 in Belvidere, Boone County, Illinois.14 He died on 23 February 1918 at Belvidere at age 46; Bill suffered for a long time with intestinal problems which were probably related to appendicitis. He died of peritonitis (listed on his death certificate as a septic infection) resulting from a burst appendix. From and obituary Sunday, February 24, 1918 "survive one daughter, Hazel, three sons, William R., Norman and Fred, all of Belvidere, his father, Uriah Pratt of Detroit and two sisters, Miss J. Pratt of Chicago and Mrs. C Montross of Detroit. The deceased has lived in Belvidere eighteen years, and was a well known and respected citizen.15,16,17" He was buried on 26 February 1918.18 William According to his son Norman, Bill had worked for what must have been Peoples s Gas Light and Coke Company which began powering the city's lighting service. Norm seemed to have thought that his father may have been one of the numerous lamplighter required to light the cities street lights. When the Chicago Edison Company began to electrify city streets, The years between 1878 and 1903 witnessed the “battle of the systems,” a period marked not only by intense technological competition but by political conflict as well. Any way, before the move to Belvidere, William learned the basics of electrifications trade and despite tough economic times, periods of unemployment and various ventures (such as operation a movie theater in Belvidere) he made most of his living as an electrician. As one story goes, during the early electrification of Belvidere, the the william Pratt family routine consisted of Will spending the day drilling holes and pulling wire through the aged oak framing of Belvidere houses. Then, in the evenings, Molly would use horse liniment to message the knots and cramps from his arms while the boys sharpened his two dozen or so drill bits. In the winter, the boys took turns pouring hot water over their fords block and cranking it until it started (Norm actually broke an arm cranking that car). The saddest memory that Norm had was of a visit to his father who while he lay dieing told him what would be expected of Nor after his father's death. Another of Norm's memories of he and his brother fighting Sundays over who would get the quarter and run to fetch beer in their dad's beer pail.19,6
