The original school was built on Pitt's property inthe same location as the Thompson house on Tate Cut-off Road, belowthe cemetery. In 1916, the school burned and was rebuilt on the samesite with the same design and floor plan. Ted and Betty Thompson purchased the school property from Earl Beeson(father of Boyd Beeson) in 1963. Since the school building was agedbeyond repair, they tore it down and built their home where it stood. Some of the bricks from the school were salvaged to make theirfireplace. The horse stable where students kept their horses duringthe school day stood just below the red metal building west of thehouse. It fell down from natural causes--old age. The well used bythe school was in front near the east corner. The original pump isstill in place and can be seen from the road, as can some of the oldroses and poplar trees that grew on the east side of the schoolbuilding. Betty Thompson describes the school as having large windows withshutters on the south side. It was heated by a furnace and had acloak room to hang coats and store lunches until lunch time. It hadwainscoting on the walls. There were indoor restrooms. Ted Thompson died in 1989 and is the last person to be buried in thePitt Cemetery. Betty and Joanne, their daughter, still live there.
Two former students of the Pitt School, who are also former next doorneighbors, were interviewed for their memories of the school--BoydHarlow of Spokane and Boyd Beeson of Palouse. Boyd Harlow attended theschool up to the fifth grade. He remembers the day the school burnedand verified that the new school was built on the same site. Hisbrother now owns the property north of the cemetery and farms 4,000acres in the area. Harlow recalls that when he lived in the Pitt area with his parents,he and his family often went to Albion to buy everything theyused--food, clothing, farm tools and machinery. "It used to be theplace to go for all your needs." Boyd Beeson got "his eight years of education right there at the PittSchool." He tells of the time when he and some of his friends hid upin the bell tower and the teacher had to look for them.
Betty Thompson told the story that some of the parents wouldn't allowtheir children to drink the water from the school well because it waslocated below the cemetery.
Pitt Post Office: Bethany post office was established June 15, 1881 on Section 33,Township 16, Range 45. The first postmaster was William R. Pitt. OnJune 15, 1884, he had the name changed to Pitt. He was postmaster forfour years. During this time, the post office was in his homesouthwest of Palouse on Four Mile Creek in the same vicinity as theschool and cemetery. On December 2, 1885, Lida C. Krebs becamepostmaster. She did not want the post office, which was in her home,to be called Pitt, so requested that it be changed to Kamiak (alsospelled Kamiack and Kamiac), after the butte just to the north(altitude 3,650). On March 10, 1887, Dorothy Pearson (Mrs. JamesPearson) became postmaster and it was moved to her home which isbelieved to be 2 1/2 miles from Mr. Pitt's home. Mail was obtainedfrom Guy (Albion) on horseback with Adam Wolf believed to have beenthe mail carrier. The post office was discontinued April 27, 1887. Pitt Cemetery: The Pitt cemetery was located under the shadow of Kamiak Butte about amile and a half west of Fallon Junction. It was on land given by W.A. Nichols and Mr. Scott. Though a deed was never given or filed, acorporation was formed June 2, 1888, to administer the operation ofthe cemetery. The Articles of Incorporation were signed by I. K.Luce, James M. Cox, John Petty, John A. Saylor and Robert Tindall. Atthe present time, Boyd Harlow and Boyd Beeson assume responsibilityfor cemetery business and deeds for lots. It is located north of theschool site where the Thompson house now stands. The first burial wasin 1883 and the last in 1989, but most were before 1930.Two burials have taken place after 1930. One was of Jesse Boyer, related to the Mael family. The last burial was of Ted Thompson, husband of Betty Thompson and father of Joanne Thompson.4
