VanderWall, 96, of 2100 Townline Rd. Wausau died Wednesday Jan. 19, 2011 at Hospice House, Wausau. He was born Nov. 19, 1914 in Green Bay to the late Charles and Ann (Hamernik) VanderWall. He attended St. Patrick Parochial School and West High School in Green Bay, and the UW-Madison where he graduated with honors with Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He married Thelma Crone on Sept. 22, 1943 at St. Francis Cathedral in Green Bay. Clifford served his country in World War II from 1940 - 1946 as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He was a registered professional engineer in the state of Wisconsin since 1950. In his career he worked at various engineering and management positions in Washington, D.C, Marinette and Wausau. He was actively involved in religious and community affairs in both Marinette and Wausau. Survivors include his wife, Thelma, Wausau; son, Peter VanderWall, Estes Park, Colo, daughter, Anne VanderWall, Bethesda, MD; granddaughter, Sarah Meyanathan, Washington, DC; grandson, Matthew Meyanathan, Toronto, Canada. He was precededin death by his parents; two sisters, Fern VanderWall and Ellen Claire Collom. Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday Jan. 24, 2011 at Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, 621 2 nd St. Wausau. Rev. William Grevatch will officiate. Burial will be in Allouez Cemetery, Green Bay. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Monday until the time of service at the church. Brainard Funeral Home, Wausau is assisting the family with arrangements. He was also on the California State Water Board at the time of the building of the state canal. His hobby was iris growing and breeding and at one time he served as the national president of the American Iris Society.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy; sons Russell (wife Carolyn), Donald (wife Ellen), Philip (wife Katia), and Steven (wife Joan); as well as seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.7,8 He "Uncle Marion" was a gentleman farmer who was raised on the Cannon family ranch in Ventura, California. The large ranch raised Walnuts, Avocado's, Lemons and cut flowers. He was a graduate of Stanford University and was a loyal alumnus. A strong Democrat, he chair of the Ventura County Democratic Party from 1946 to 1950. He was a candidate for the U.S. House of Representative from California's 11th District in 1950 but was defeated. He later was appointed by the Governor of California to serve on the California State Water Commission. He was a strong Methodist and member of the Lions and Freemasons. Marion was also an Iris breeder seving as Presiden of the American Iris Society (AIS) during the 1950's.9
