Boris Dimitry Small was born on 15 May 1910 at Russia; Boris' fathers naturalization papters indicate that he was born 2 May rather than 15 May.1 He was the son of Dimitry Trophimovich Smolentseff and Maria Evseve.2 Boris was recorded on the passenger list of his mother, Maria, on 22 April 1925 ariving at Seattle, King County, Washington; S.S. President Jakson.3 Boris married Jean Marion Stafford, daughter of LeRoy H. Stafford and Marian Alberta Hezzelwood, on 16 February 1936 at San Francisco, California.4,2 He and Jean Marion Stafford appeared on the census of 9 April 1940 in Palo Alto, California.5 Boris was a long time friend of Norman Uriah Pratt. Norman and Marion Pratt met Boris and Jean Small during the mid 1930's. They became fast friends for the raminder of their lives. They traveled together, camped together and spent countless hours dinning and dicussing their families. In the early 1980's, Jean and Marion took a extended tour of England together. In turn, Boris would drag Norm fishing when ever he could and some of their fishing trips were the stuff ledgens are made of.4 According to the Research of Linda Berg Stafford, Boris wrote in 1993, "At the age of seven my family got caught in Russian Revolution of 1917. My father, Dimitry Trophim Smolentseff, a Captain in Monarchist Army, could not survive by staying under new regime, so we fled across Siberia to China.
We came to Harbin, a Russian city in province of Manchuria. So did thousands of other Russians. Harbin could not supply that many jobs even though being the hub of commerce between Russia, China, Japan and Korea. My father heard of an opening on Trans Siberian railroad as a telegrapher. In three days he learned the Morse Code and the use of the telegraphic key. Passed exam and got the job. We lived six years in China. My father quit the job and on severance pay bought the ticket to America in 1922. He earned enough money to buy tickets for our family to come in 1924. My mother and three children joined him in Seattle, Washington. I graduated from Broadway High School and went to the University of Washington for two years. Engineers sold apples on every street corner during the depression so I became an apprentice to a Watchmaker. In three years became a Certified Watchmaker. In 1935 met Jean Stafford and became engaged. On my vacation I came to California and stopped to see Stanford University in Palo Alto. Fell in love with town and applied and got a job with a Jeweler. February 16, 1936 married my fiance from Seattle, Jean Stafford. By the time World War II broke out we had two children. I did not want to be drafted; I applied to defense industry as a precision machinist. My job was to manufacture U.S. Navy Sights for Torpedos. I worked grave-yard shift for three years when my wife and I got together enough money to open a Jewelery store on main street of Palo Alto. Jean and I worked together to make business grow and for twenty-one years we raised the family of three children. In 1968 my left kidney was removed because of encapsulated cancer. I never had any after effects. In 1972 I had Major heart attack but survived because of natural by-pass, no operation. When I retired in 1977, I enjoyed painting in oil, watercolor and pastel. In February 16, 1993 we will be married 56 years. We love California, San Francisco Bay Area. With lovely climate and our family close we are well set."
in 1993.6 Boris Dimitry Small died on 27 December 2005 at Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, California, at age 95.1
