Mabel Rains was born on 11 February 1889 at California; In the house of her mother, Lydia Rains, Widow.3 She was the daughter of John D. Rains and Lydia M Pinny.3 Mabel Rains appeared on the census of between 20 June 1900 and 23 June 1900 in Township 7, Placer County, California.3 Mabel was included in the census of her mother Lydia M Pinny between 21 June 1900 and 23 June 1900 at Township 7, Placer County, California.3 Mabel Rains married William J Hewes circa 1907 at California.4 Mabel and her husband William Hewes appeared on the census of 18 April 1910 in Ward 3, Stockton, San Joaquin County, California.4 Mabel Rains married Glenn Harold Steele, son of Fred Steele and Ruth Elizabeth Updyke, circa 1922 at California.1 Mabel Rains appeared on the census of 26 April 1930 in Norwalk State Hospital, Norwalk, Los Angeles County, California.5 She died on 14 September 1930 at Los Angeles, California, at age 41; From a photo copy of an article from the Billings Gazette (Billings, Montana) intitled "Tired of Complaints Avout Marital Troubles"; "Tired of hearing Mrs. Mabel A. Steele, 36, complain about her marital troubles, Mrs. Ruth Weiner, 40, a sister, Sunday shot and killed the woman.";"Police were informed that Mrs. Steele attempted to commit suicide about a year ago and was taken to Norwalk State hospital for observation. She was released in August and was depressed because her husband had taken two of her three small children and left her."1,2 She A biography written by J'aime Rubio
and posted on Find-A-Grave: "Mabel Rains was born to Lydia Rains and John Rains on February 11, 1889. Mabel grew up in Placer County, and in 1907 she married William Hewes and moved to Stockton, Ca. William died on January 11, 1914, leaving her a widow; By the early 1920s she remarried, this time to Glenn Steele. Their union produced three children: Frederick, Maeotta and Glenna Nadine; Unfortunately, shortly after the birth of Glenna Nadine, Mabel had some sort of breakdown when Glenn left her and took the older two children. Unable to care for Glenna Nadine, Mabel's sister Edith Purdy stepped in and took Glenna changing her name to Nadine Purdy, and raising her as her own daughter; Mabel was sadly put in the Glendale Sanitarium and later transferred to the State Hospital at Norwalk. After a year of being institutionalized she was released to the care of her other sister Ruth Weimer in Los Angeles. Only there for about a month, Ruth claimed that Mabel was suffering from hallucinations and begging to die. After constant crying to be put out of her misery, in an emotional break Ruth shot and killed her sister. She was tried for the murder of Mabel, but circumstances surrounding the case persuaded the jury that it was a "mercy killing" and that Ruth was suffering from a fit of emotional amnesia at the time of the murder, making her basically "insane" for the moment and not accountable for her actions. She was acquitted for all charges and released in December of 1930; As of today, the whereabouts of Mabel's remains are unknown.--."
