Harry Eugene Burke Sr. was born on 19 May 1878 at Homestead, Paradise Valley, Nevada.2,3 He was the son of Herman Daniel Burke and Sarah Eugenia Jones.1 Harry Eugene Burke Sr. He was actually born in the old Camp Scott buildings which were north of town.. Proof of the location and date of H.E. Burke's birth was provided in the fallowing General Affidavit given by Mary Freemonth, age thirty eight years and wife of John F Freemonth age sixty one years, citizens of the town of Paradise, county of Humboldt, State of Nevada. This affidavit states that "I was present with the above named Eugenia S. Burke, when she was delivered of a male child, which child was born in Paradise Valley Nevada on the 19th day of May 1878 and said child was named Eugene Burke. There was no physicion present. The husband Herman Burke, myself and other neighbor ladies had to act in the capacity of accoun--- in the absence of the regular physician and I remember the date as above stated and the circumstances very distinctly".3
Harry first appears in the census of his parents, Herman Daniel Burke and Sarah Eugenia Jones, on 10 June 1880 at Fremont Township, Santa Clara County, California.4 Gene is listed in Hermans and Sarah's household during the Territorial Census' of 1883 and 1885 for what was to become the State of Washington and in the house of Alfred Baker and Sarah house in 1892. He finished his education by earning a PhD. in Entomology from Stanford University on 18 Jun 1928.6
Before he graduated from Pullman, a fire destroyed Harry's residece in spring of 1900 taking with it all his belongings. According to his daughter, Marion Burke Pratt, Harry's step father Alfred Baker, while waiting for a ship to go to the Klondike, went to Pullman and paid to replace the things that Harry's lost in the fire. He (Alfred), who had by then deserted Harry's mother (Sarah Eugenia) , did so with the provision that Harry would not tell his mother that he had seen Alfred at Pullman! A life long relationship with William Douglas Edmonston, an Artist and self taught Entomologist was one such relationship. "Willie", as the family referred to him, came from a family of artists of some renown. He "was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. A graduate of the School of Fine Arts of the University of Edinburgh, he was an artist of considerable ability and exhibited some of his water colors at the Royal Scottish Academy and at the Royal Academy of England. He came to the United States in 1890 and settled at Brunston near Larkspur, CO".9,10

The story of Harry Eugene Burke Sr. and Fred Eugeneheusch Mozart . After retirement the H.E. Burke and Norman Pratt families bought a home on Mozart Avenue in what at the time rural Los Gatos California. The home had been built by Fred and Eva Mozart. The property had been a two acer chicken farm. In an efort to downsize, Fred and Eva built another house next to was to become the Burke-Pratt home and started a new chicken ranch. Fred and Eva were retired Vaudville people who, besides farming, during the 20's used their home to board struggling young actors. At some time during that peoriod, a young English actor named Archibald Alexander Leach (Cary Grant) spent several months boarding with them. So, David and Paul Pratt ended up sleeping in a room slept in by Cary Grant. Neat huh! Another interesting note about Fred Mozart involved Fred's death. The night Fred Died, Sam Hatter the local undertaker was called. The room where Fred's body was located was dark. When Sam went in to get the body, a parrott belonging to Fred and Eva said, in Fred's voice, some thing like "hello, how are you doing". Even though Sam had been an undertaker along time, it gave him the willies. circa 1940 at Los Gatos, Santa Clara County, California.9 The H. E. Burke and Norman Pratt families appeared on the census of 3 May 1940 in Redwood Township (Los Gatos), California.18 Harry was living there when he was recorded on a 1942 World War II Draft Registration Card.19 After downsizing and moving to Campbell, California Harry Eugene Burke Sr. died on 26 March 1963 at San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, at age 84.20
During more than 50 years of marriage, Harry and his wife, Marion lived in many places. Their first official residence was 136 Rhode Island Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. where they lived from September 1907 until June 1909. In 1910 and 1911 they lived in Baker City Oregon and then moved to Yreka California in 1911. They remained in Yreka through the summer of 1912. Between 1912 and 1916 they called Placerville, Eldorado County, California home. It was on to Los Gatos, California in time for school in 1916. Los Gatos was called home until 1921 when they moved to Palo Alto where they lived through 1938. For most of their stay in Palo Alto, they lived a 1551 Emerson Street. Between 1939 and 1961, they again lived in Los Gatos on Mozart lane. They moved to Sunberry Lane, Campbell, California shortly before Harry's death in 1963.21
Among others, Harry Eugene Burke Sr. and Jesse Lee Webb worked together at the Buearu of Entomology.6
Though not related, the Harry Eugene Burke Sr. and Arthur Jacobson families were also closely associated. Their relationship began when Harry, a department of Agreculture entomologist, was studying and supervising the spraying of needletiers and sawflies along the Yellowstone park highway outside of West Yellowstone, Montana. That was during the summers of 1925-1927. Art was a Yellowstone Park Ranger and a batchelor who at the time and gave up his residence for the Burke family during their stay at Yellowstone. A strong friendship developed at the time and lasted through the remainder of both thair lives. Art and Vee actually bought part of the Burkes 2 acres on Mozart Avenue in Los Gatos where they built a home after Art's retirement from the Park service.9,22
In 2002 Harry Eugene Burke was honored by Washington State University as having been the first to recieve a graduate degree with a major in Entomology.23 A synapsis of Burke's contribution to the field of Forest entomology can be found in a USDA General Technical Report intitled Harry E. Burke and John M. Miller, Pioneers in Western Forest Entomology.24
