James "Jimmie" Garfield Burke was born on 3 June 1883 at Kent, King County, Washington.1 He was the son of Herman Daniel Burke and Sarah Eugenia Jones.1 Jim was in the household during the territorial census of Herman Daniel Burke in April 1885 at Titusville, King County, Washington Territory.2 Jimmie was in the household during the census of Herman and Eugenia on 30 July 1887 at at Kent, King County, Washington Territory; Recorded by Luke McRedward.3 He was in the household during the census of Alfred C. Baker and Sarah Eugenia Jones in 1892 at Kent, King County, Washington; Sarah's last name is listed as Baker and she is in the household of A. Baker.4
Jimmie was listed as one of Herman's 5 children in the widows pension declaration of Sarah Eugenia Jones on 18 December 1893; In a declaration for pension of children under sixteen years of age, Sarah provided proof of the names of her and Herman Burke's children and of Herman's date of death. In that declaration, she states that "Eugenia S. Baker, resident of Kent, age 48 years is the legal guardian of Eugene Burke, Willie Burke, Victor Burke, James Burke, and Mabel Burke, that they are the legitimate children of Herman Burke who Enlisted under the name of Herman Burke at Indianapolis on ----- Certif No 265092 in the war of the Rebellion who died(3) Sept 20, 1888".5 Jimmie last appeared on an U.S. census in the home of his mother Sarah on 1 June 1900 at Meeker Precinct, King County, Washington; Record very difficult to read...6
James "Jimmie" Garfield Burke died on 10 February 1907 at New Mexico at age 23. Died of pneumonia complicated by consumption.7

Like his siblings, Jim was a college graduate receiving a BA at Washington State College. Although his mother claimed, in a letter to his older brother Harry, that there had never been a case of TB in the family, Jimmy had apparently contracted tuberculosis at some point before 1906. He accompanied his brother Harry to the High Sierra for the summer of 1906 because it was though the mountain air would be good for his lungs. His older brother Harry by then had become his primary source of support. When Harry indicated that he intended to marry Marion Armstrong in the spring to 1907, Jimmie, not wanting to be a burden to his just married older brother, found work in a lumber mill in New Mexico. Working in a lumber mill during winter was obviously not the best place someone with tuberculosis. In Early February he contracted pneumonia and died. His brother Harry always felt that he was somehow partly responsible for Jimmie's death.8,9
