Aunt Claire was born on 4 April 1911 at Baker City, Baker County, Oregon. Mabel Claire "Aunt Claire" Burke was the daughter of Harry Eugene Burke Sr. and Marion Josephine Armstrong. Aunt Claire first appeared in the census of her parents, Harry Eugene Burke Sr. and Marion Josephine Armstrong on 23 January 1920 at Los Gatos, Santa Clara County, California.2 Claire was still living at home during census of her parents on 16 April 1930 at 1551 Emmerson, Palo Alto, California.1 On 15 December 1935 Claire married Harold Davidson Cramer, son of David Harold "D.H" Cramer and Florence D Davidson.3 Harold and Claire appeared on the census of 16 April 1940 in Moscow, Latah County, Idaho.4 Mabel Claire "Aunt Claire" Burke and Harold Davidson Cramer appeared on the 1950 U.S. Censusr of 12 April 1950 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California.5 Claire died on 2 May 1999 at Los Altos, Santa Clara County, California, at age 88.6,7 As her nephew Dave Pratt remembers, Aunt Claire was the H.E. Burke child most like their father. She appeared the most expressive and outgoing of the clan with many of the mannerisms of her Dad. During WWII, The senior Burkes, Aunt Claire, her two oldest girls and the Pratt's shared the Mozart Ave. residence for several years and from nephew David childhood memories, he believes that a good time was had by all (the Kid's at least). Whatever happened to the extended families of old? Aunt Claire's Tamale pie was a staple at most of the very many family pot lucks. Her recipe was as fallow's: Tamale Pie: Line bottom and sides of casserole with thick yellow cornmeal mush. Fill with Tamale Mixture and cover top with cornmeal mush. Bake from one to two hours at 325 degrees. (Tamale Mixture: Fry one or two chopped onions in oil, add lean ground beef (2 lbs or more depending on how many to eat), Flavor meat with salt, pepper, and chili powder; add tomato sauce (about 1 can for every pound of meat); add can of olives). She was also the one who took charge of collecting and documenting her mother's life encouraging mother Marion to record her memories. Much of the narration dealing with Marion Armstrong Burke was borrowed from her work.8,9
