(?) on 2 July 1870 at Pilot, Cherokee County, Iowa.2 John W Pitt married Oceanica (?) at California. John W Pitt and Oceanica (?) appeared on the census of 15 June 1880 in Analy, Sonoma County, California.3 John W Pitt married Mira/Myra G. (?) at California.1 John W Pitt The fallowing was copied from World Tree Project: 22555. NOTE: In the early 1880's, William R. Pitt and his wife, Mary Stevens, moved to the area just west of Fallon Junction. They purchased their property in several parcels in Sections 32 and 33 in 1881, 1883 and1885. According to one document, they purchased a 160 acre parcel for$500 in gold coin. Their home and barn were located east of the Thompson house which setsjust below the cemetery. Pitt's old barn is still there, though anaddition has been built on the east side. This property is now ownedby Tate Investment Co. The Pitts sold all of their property to F. M.Busby in 1890, though their son, Charles, retained a small parcel inthe southeast corner of Section 32. William and Mary Pitt's children were Alice Dewey, Ida, John, WilliamJ., Nellie, Charles, Daisy and Myrtle. Alice Dewey married VilroyBeaman Hurlbert while their families were still living in Iowa. Whenthe Hurlberts came to Washington, they bought property adjoining thePitt property to the south. Vilroy and Alice's children were Roy, Maty, Nettie, Lora Lynn, Ernest,Alvin and Earl. Lora Lynn married Ora Deloss Kenoyer, son of GeorgeCuppy Kenoyer. There were three things named after William: the school which wasbuilt on a corner of his property, the post office which was in hishome and the cemetery which is located north of the school site. Pitt School District No. 55 was located on Section 33, Township 16,Range 45. It was established before 1890 and consolidated with Albionin July, 1938. The original school was built on Pitt's property inthe same location as the Thompson house on Tate Cut-off Road, belowthe cemetery. In 1916, the school burned and was rebuilt on the samesite with the same design and floor plan. Ted and Betty Thompson purchased the school property from Earl Beeson(father of Boyd Beeson) in 1963. Since the school building was agedbeyond repair, they tore it down and built their home where it stood. Some of the bricks from the school were salvaged to make theirfireplace. The horse stable where students kept their horses duringthe school day stood just below the red metal building west of thehouse. It fell down from natural causes--old age. The well used bythe school was in front near the east corner. The original pump isstill in place and can be seen from the road, as can some of the oldroses and poplar trees that grew on the east side of the schoolbuilding. Betty Thompson describes the school as having large windows withshutters on the south side. It was heated by a furnace and had acloak room to hang coats and store lunches until lunch time. It hadwainscoting on the walls. There were indoor restrooms. Ted Thompson died in 1989 and is the last person to be buried in thePitt Cemetery. Betty and Joanne, their daughter, still live there.
Two former students of the Pitt School, who are also former next doorneighbors, were interviewed for their memories of the school--BoydHarlow of Spokane and Boyd Beeson of Palouse. Boyd Harlow attended theschool up to the fifth grade. He remembers the day the school burnedand verified that the new school was built on the same site. Hisbrother now owns the property north of the cemetery and farms 4,000acres in the area. Harlow recalls that when he lived in the Pitt area with his parents,he and his family often went to Albion to buy everything theyused--food, clothing, farm tools and machinery. "It used to be theplace to go for all your needs." Boyd Beeson got "his eight years of education right there at the PittSchool." He tells of the time when he and some of his friends hid upin the bell tower and the teacher had to look for them.
Betty Thompson told the story that some of the parents wouldn't allowtheir children to drink the water from the school well because it waslocated below the cemetery.
Pitt Post Office: Bethany post office was established June 15, 1881 on Section 33,Township 16, Range 45. The first postmaster was William R. Pitt. OnJune 15, 1884, he had the name changed to Pitt. He was postmaster forfour years. During this time, the post office was in his homesouthwest of Palouse on Four Mile Creek in the same vicinity as theschool and cemetery. On December 2, 1885, Lida C. Krebs becamepostmaster. She did not want the post office, which was in her home,to be called Pitt, so requested that it be changed to Kamiak (alsospelled Kamiack and Kamiac), after the butte just to the north(altitude 3,650). On March 10, 1887, Dorothy Pearson (Mrs. JamesPearson) became postmaster and it was moved to her home which isbelieved to be 2 1/2 miles from Mr. Pitt's home. In later years, according to Marion Burke, one of Marion's most vivid memories of her youth was that of the family leaving their Fairfax home as the "Yankees" entered town and leaving a large bowl of fresh strawberry's on the kitchen table. At the end of her life, she had a severe heart condition and angina caused her a great deal of pain. Although Marion's daughter Marion Armstrong Burke was a strict teetotaler, she would ask her son-in-law Norman Pratt if he would make up a hot toddy for Grandmother Armstrong and that would ease the pain and make her comfortable for a while. Great-grandson David remembers her only as a silhouette in a rocking chair, but for him that it is a vivid memory.12
